LPS for NUC

I am choosing a new LPS for NUC. Does anyone have the opportunity to compare Farad3 vs Paul Hynes SR4T? I know that there was an evaluation on the forum and there was a penchant for Farad Super3 compared to Paul Hynes SR4. Now, however, we have a version of the SR4T, which has a positive response (but compared to the original SR4, I do not remember the comparison with Farad). Farad is now also a cheaper option compared to the new SR4T (after the European price increase Hynes). However finances aside, the important thing is as it sounds... Alternatively, some other LPS tips for this particular use.

Now I'm using SR4 for NUC, which I would use for another purpose and get a new one.

What model NUC are you using? Reason I'm asking is because the i7 models have higher wattage requirements. The Farad Super 3 does not supply enough current for models like nuc8i7beh. Mattijs does say he is in the midst of coming out with a high current model for use with these nucs.

Now I have NUC7PJYH. I would upgrade to the older NUC7i7DNBE if I got one - which should still be OK. I heard something about Farad Super19; 9A and a price similar to Nucleus...

You sure do not need a 9A supply for those little NUCs. And most all NUCs run fine from 12V—just as indicated in Intel’s technical documents for those models (12-19V).  There are a couple hundred people powering NUCs and Roon Nucleus at 12V with our choke-filtered, dual-output 5~7.4A JS-2.  
Heck, I even have a small fanless/driveless/headless Pentium NUC (running Audilinux) being powered from a 1.1A UltraCap LPS-1.2–though that’s pushing it.

Yes, now I also use 12v (SR4). I used to try LPS-1.2 and it was not stable - but I had 2x8GB RAM and a case with a fan. Now I'm running fanless and only 1x4GB RAM, so I think it would work, but I want to use LPS-1.2 for ISO REGEN which is waiting for power...
The JS-2 would be on the list if two rails were needed (after all, it costs twice as much as the above options).

I use a Paul Hynes SR7 with a Nuc i7 and it works flawless. It is a mr2 so it works with a Sotm switch too. Very satisfied

I have no doubt about SR7. In fact, I was ready to order the SR7T 12V + 19V. I wanted to use it to power NUC and later build a Xeon server: 19V for ATX (via HDPLEX 800W DC-ATX) and 12V for EPS. At the last minute, I noticed that it is now 20% more expensive (for the UK and the EU) and postponed the project... Now I am looking for a appropriate new power supply only for the NUC.

I just bought a NUC7i7DNBE from a fellow AS member. I was planning on powering it with an Uptone LPS1.2 (1.1A), but I just found Roy's post that made me question the viability of that. 

 

The seller confirmed that the NUC7i7DNBE does run on the LPS1.2; I believe that. However, am I much better off getting a more powerful PS in terms of SQ? I may be able to get a used Farad Super3 (3A) at 15V. Would there be a significant gain ordering a new Farad at 19V?

So why not purchase the Uptone JS-2 ? 
Faster delivery and cheaper.

Only for NUC is it unnecessarily expensive to buy a power supply with two rails. I would use two rails only in the case of the intended server, but the JS-2 is not strong enough for it (ATX + EPS) - and it would not even work (with HDPLEX 800W DC-ATX), because it has a maximum of only 12V.

Hi Novaca,

 

I'd suggest that your basic NUC is a bigger limitation on SQ than the delta between an SR4 and an SR4T. You'd probably be better investing your money in buying an i7 NUC like the i7DNBE you reference as the jump (I owned both) is substantial.

 

Also the Nucleus is just an NUC at twice the price for the privilege of a shiny Roon badge. Given Roons complete lack of interest in Sound Quality and their denial that hardware makes a difference (all hail the infallible RAAT!) it's the very last thing I'd buy.

 

Buy an i7. It'll be a bigger improvement. Then buy the SR4T because you know you want to 😉

So far as you could say, it is decided.

 

However, as time goes on, I still can't get rid of the idea of a built Xeon server. Unfortunately, I know that I will not have a power supply for this for a long time (at the SR4T level).

If anyone had an idea or experience what a NUC + SR4T versus Xeon server with a switching power supply + JCAT USB Femto with SR4T would sound like, I would be grateful. I know there are many variables, but... at least an estimate.

Fair enough.

 

Just saying that the i7 upgrade costs the same as the SR4T upgrade and is likely to be a bigger bump in SQ. But if you're heading to Xeon then that's a different story. The upcoming Farad and Sean Jacobs DC4 are contenders then. But at a pretty penny!

Not really, sorry.

 

I read on here that Farad is working on a higher amperage PSU. I think the Super3 is capable of around 3amps. From memory and I could well be wrong here they are working on a more powerful (pun intended) version that can do in the 6-8amps region.

 

I suspect the post I'm recalling is buried somewhere in the Novel Way thread.
