Into the Future

There certainly seems to be something of a small revival of interest in CD players and transport across various forums.  I don’t know whether this is just clever pre- marketing from the likes of Schitt or something more.  A back to back test of SOTA CDT/CDP vs file based replay would  be interesting.  Personally I find  that file playback from a custom thumb drive  or SD card  card transport beats both streaming and disc SQ wise, and is more convenient than a CD player too.

playing a dsd file in a thumb drive on my sr6013 sounds damn good....what is this custom thumb drive you are talking about?

Hey, that's what it's all about.  You don't have to chase the brass ring.  Play what you like, kick back and enjoy your day.

I agree, i just commented in another thread that I have spent a lot of money and time "chasing" best hardware, when I realized that depending on the music, I much prefer some hardware vs other hardware and that there isn't any "magic bullet".  In some cases I may prefer a schiit dac and in other cases I prefer a dsd dac.  When i play rock, it sucks on my jazzy speakers that I love for vocals.  I never did find speakers that I liked better for both rock and for jazz...although i am tempted to try tekton now, but I am relatively certain i wouldn't prefer them to ATC for jazz ballads with vocals....and damn...i sure wish i still had my jbl 4425's.

There are more and more transports out there. A friend has the Jay Audio transport from China. It is built like a tank and a top loader. Sounds great and works well. Pricey but not by audiophile standards. I believe there is a $40,000 transport out there. Now that is pricey.

Many people believe they are much more important than they are and feel like everyone owes them something. As an example, here is a PM I received not too long ago.

You are in good company.

I think that the world of digital music playback has moved beyond the hardware and well into the software/configuration side of things.

It certainly is amazing when you stop and REALLY think about it.

How much music, emotion, and God given talent, can really be put on a small .wav file, and how many of these files can be stored on a micro-sd card.  If not for digital music, there would not be the diversity we have across the world....it's only 1's and 0's, yet it makes so much color.

Its extremely "bizzare" to be attacked by the owner of a forum for simply stating my personal experience. I never said I was smarter than all or any manufacturers. There are certain things that manufacturers do not bother to do inside their products that would be too labor intensive that I know how to do, and can implement and improve upon. And yes, in my decades of experiments I'm sure I have learned some things that very few if any have also discovered. When a worthwhile, creative, funny, knowledgeable interesting person joins your mostly rather boring forum, do you harass them instead of being ggrateful? Do you think it would be a traumatic experience or just awful to be removed from a forum like this? What is your IQ? By the way the ultra expensive speaker brand I was talking about is one that I am sure you personally and intimately know.

Yes, it's the development costs for the item, and the degree of fussiness that the company goes to that ultimately determines the actual end cost of the component - just throwing in the latest, gee whiz technology ideas, and the most expensive items in the parts model lines of a supplier are no guarantees of anything.

I always think here of the last audio show, where a very expensive CD player by a Swiss manufacturer put up some extremely good SQ ... checked it out later, and the insides were exquisite - beautifully developed to the highest standards, with great effort expended in power supplies, etc. What was the DAC? ... ummm, a boring, single chip unit from a standard manufacturer, that costs peanuts - probably unavailable now, because they make "better spec'ed" ones, 😝.

As they say, it's all about the implementation ...

Speaking of back to the future: the newest 40 plus year old addition to the family, a lovely Naim NAP 160 from the local dealer for $500 (via eBay) picked up today. No service history, but looks like it was recapped at least the big ones at some point. Deal with that when the time comes. Needs a better cable as well (have to rework the old bulgin connector it comes with). For now sounding big and juicy and really musical. Old is good, new is good, the old can be the present and the new, well, is always new.

@charlesphoto I sold my recapped CB NAP 250 to a friend to pick up a newer DR for myself, but the CB has "the sound" we love Naim for! (I love my DR, too.) Regarding your cable comment, I just noticed the boys "across the pond" talking about Witch Hat cable's Morgana cable for Naim. They're ex-Naim techs turned Naim cable specialists. Mine aren't here yet so I can't comment on the sound, but they're well regarded, it seems. (And clearly worth taking a flyer on, for me anyway.)

Love the old recapped CB sound however! Congrats!

I use the Witch Hat 4 pin din 'Hatpin' between the V1 and 160 (previously 110). Great and much better than the Naim basic cable. The Morgana's just a bit rich for me...
