Best speaker for 100 - 200 USD?

Yeah.. I spoke to my friend this morning who's into hobby for years... he said I won't go that far with my budget...

 

He suggest $400-500 for a good start...

These passive speakers out of Shenzhen are under $110/pair. But you'll need to find yourself a Taobao agent to execute the transaction and the shipping might absorb most of the rest of your budget. I've bought a couple of pairs, excellent value.

Right. For some active speakers you might not need a DAC, you definitely don't need an amp with actives. But you also have the option of a 'Full Digital Amp' which takes a digital input and feeds passive speakers without need of a DAC.

I see the price is considerably raised and the shipping is eyewatering! No longer within the OP's budget.

Look at PSB, Elac, and Emotiva. Lots of good choices of both types of speakers. Don't have to worry about shipping from China, either.
