emm Labs DAC: adding either a Sonore Signature Rendu or Auralic Aries G2

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just got the EMM DA2 V2 Dac and I am presently using it with the Allo Usbridge Signature. It sounds wonderful but I'm wondering if the sound could be better with either the NS1 or something like the Sonore Signature Rendu.

Has anyone directly compared these two? Also, is the Sonore compatible with DSD and MQA?

Thanks,

i don't have any sonore boxes but it might help to get an impression of the ns1:
before my ns1 i played for years with an aries femto. i liked the aes interface on the da2 and before that on the dac2x a little better but unfortunately only with a very expensive cable 😔

then you are limited to 192khz and dsd64 which is more than enough in my opinion.
with the ns1 i play with the optical cable.

it plays at eye level like the aes cable. that's my impression and that of some others who are partly not addicted to the adiophile virus.
an usb cable does not work with the ns1 anyway.
i use roon. i was not satisfied with upnp. but i tried it just for the sake of it.
i also have version 1 of da2. i don't have the upgrade yet. maybe everything is different with version 2 😉

@msb1,  I woudl suggest taking a look at Chris' review of the EMM DV2 DAC, he comments on using the Sonore signature Rendu SEoptical with it.  The Sonore will pass any MQA files to the DV2 for decoding without issue.

Will read it. Has he compared the ns1 with the sonore?

i also don‘t really understand why this is necessary.

with aes it‘s not needed.

shahin from emm labs wrote to me that version 2 of the da2 handles track infos over the rs232 link.

it‘s also stated in the manual of da2 v2.

but until now the upgrade is not available in austria and my dealer is on holyday for 2 months 😒

so maybe in autumn i get news.

Hi Guenter,

Have you received news about the V2 upgrade from your dealer?

We are happy to help with this process in whatever way we can.

Cheers from EMM Labs :)

Hi @msb1,

The connection protocol we implemented for DA2/NS1 integration is the EMM Link. We have had many customers report that the NS1, when paired with DA2 V2, punches far above its price point for a streaming solution.

Chris also had excellent results with Sonore’s line of products.

We are here to answer any questions should you have them.

Cheers from EMM Labs :)

I went for the Sonore Signature Rendu SE optical and received it a few weeks ago.

The combination DA2 V2 with the Sonore Signature is the best Streamer/DAC I ever heard. Previously I owned a used Vivaldi Stack (Upsampler v2, Clock, DAC v2). IMO, the DA2 + Sonore has more space/air around instruments and voices. Another highlight are the lows and lower mids... beautiful and unheard before.

Thank you for the good words @Urs :)

If you care to share your experiences with the DA2 V2 as a sort of ‘testimonial’ please email me at [email protected]

And please let us know if we can be of service in any way.

All the best from EMM Labs!

I have a Playback Designs USB-XIII and was hoping to compare the Optical and USB on the DA2 using this, but it doesn't seem to be compatible.

I'm researching options and will likely choose one soon.

Thanks.

hello,

my dealer is still on holiday 😉

he's a friend of mine.

he told me he comes back possibly next week.

but he is in close contact with the distributer and he knows how much it costs and how to handle it.

so maybe in the next few weeks i know more details.

i'm not in a hurry. so far i don't really miss anything with version 1 of the da2 🙂

  • 4 weeks later...

I ended up getting the Sonore Opticalrendu (roon only version) and it's a great match with the EMM DA2 V2. I'm using a Hdplex 200W LPSU to power it at 7.5V.

When EMM upgrade the NS1 to handle higher DSD rates, I will probably get one.

Only need to find a good USB cable now!

is it possible to transmit more than dsd64 over one aes cable?

but maybe with the optical link...

I don't use AES so don't know the answer to this.

The NS1 uses an optical connection to the DAC and the Opticalrendu uses USB.

Yes, we went to extra trouble and expense to make the EtherREGEN symmetrical about its moat (i.e. differential clocking and reclocking and all super voltage regulation is the same both sides) just so that B>A performance would be equal to A>B. Main reason we did it was for optical endpoint users (opticalRendu), but there are other uses for B>A orientation.

If I use the optical output, does the “input side” matter? Aren’t they galvanicly isolated?
