Popular Post Ryan Berry
Hey Chris, I suppose my answer depends on the intent. If you're comparing A to B, as long as everything is kept constant, I would do what works best for you. From a purist standpoint, I prefer an analog preamp in place of using digital volume controls myself, especially when the volume is being set at the computer instead of inside the DAC. You're of course going to be weighing the effect of what a preamp does to the sound (there's no such thing as zero effect) vs. what the digital volume control is doing to the sound, so I guess it also takes the right preamp to make that decision. Our products have always been designed with the opinion that you're going to lose something with a digital volume control, though I know Ariel designed a pretty brilliant system in place to minimize this. Ultimately for your purposes, do what sounds best to you, just keep it the same when going from A to B of course. Cheers, Ryan The Computer Audiophile and sandyk 1 1 President Ayre Acoustics, Inc.
