AudioDoctor
Apple will shoot themselves in the foot trying to transition to ARM chips. Would this not require a complete rewrite of ALL of the software we currently run on our Macs? Is Roon going to want to do that? Sure, they may feel obligated due to their user base that has purchased lifetime licenses, or they can say, too bad so sad, go buy compatible hardware and continue to use your license. Same with Audirvana, and this is only two examples. It will effect every single piece of non apple software we have on our systems and we have paid for. I genuinely believe this will be the end of the Apple computer. I hope. the iPads and iPhones continue to sell well... https://www.macrumors.com/2020/02/24/mac-apple-designed-processor-2021/ No electron left behind. Link to comment
kirkmc
Their processors for iOS devices are ARM based chips. The software is currently compatible, perhaps via some sort of emulation. That's how iPad apps can run on the Mac in the Catalyst framework. So I don't see this as being a big deal. I write about Macs, music, and more at Kirkville. kirkmc
I've been using Macs for nearly 30 years. I've seen this type of hand wringing over and over again. You'll survive. If you're worried, switch to Windows. Or, I've heard that this might be the year of Linux on the desktop. I write about Macs, music, and more at Kirkville. Author of Take Control of macOS Media Apps. I am waiting for the new MBP 13" with the same keyboard as the 16" with an Intel chip inside which will serve me for the next years. Matt "I want to know why the musicians are on stage, not where". kirkmc
Just now, AudioDoctor said: I’m not sure what to think right now. I guess wait and see Is about it. A wise strategy in all cases. For now, it's just a rumor with no roadmap for compatibly. This is at least a couple of years away, and will certainly roll in gradually, starting with laptops.
