Ā With the SQ I work towards you get both ... imaging and 'musicality' - the stereo image doesn't create super duper precision, as in you could runĀ a laser scanning rig over the musician, and then 3D print a Madame Tussauds figurine that would take your breath away, š ... but it does sound like "the real thing". Ā Getting laser accuracy in "seeing" things I find is bit of a gimmick - the ease with which the whole sound gells, yet still makes it easy to see where everything "was set up" for the recording is more important to me - where it is no problem 'looking' at some sound source, and following it, while the rest of sound making slips "into the background". Sorry, you are wrong,Ā Frank. REAL, two mike stereo, whether co-incident, Blumlein, XY, AB, ORTF, or MS CANĀ give pinpoint imaging ANDĀ a wide soundstage if done correctly. What WILL NOTĀ give pinpoint imaging areĀ spaced omni (either two or three)Ā mikes! I wouldnāt brag about being in old āeverything-sounds-the-sameā, āyes-we-have-no-opinionāĀ Julian Hirschās camp in anything, if I were you!š John Dyson, sandyk, semente and 1 other 4 George Link to comment

Ā Whether there is a single soundstage, or there are multiple acoustic spaces all layered on top of each other, will depend, yes, on how the recording was done. Variety is the spice of life, and I have no problem with every recording presenting very different worlds to me - if the spaces are quite bizarre that doesn't offend me, if I can see it making sense as part of a creative process, Yes, thatās true. EMI, in Britain, used to record a lot in The Waterford Town Hall. Every time I played an HMV or the (always poorer sounding) US made āAngel RecordsāĀ version of the same recording, I always noticed something wrong with the soundstage. The ambienceĀ seemed to lean to the left. I couldnāt figure out why. Then, many years after first noticing the phenomenon, I saw a picture (probably in HFN&RR) of the hall, with an orchestra arrayed on the floor of the hall. It was āLā shaped! With a large space leading off to the left at a right angle to the main hall! Suddenly the reason for the lopsided ambience was clear. The interesting thing was that the space added an easily recognized sonic character to any performance recorded there! fas42 and trappy 2 George Link to comment

If you only heard odd soundstaging with EMI records caused by the Hall's acoustics then you should have heard the same with many Decca and UK produced RCA recordings as they too were made in Watford Town Hall. Ā Finally, Watford Town Hall ( now renamed Watford Colosseum) is shoebox shaped like the Concergebouw and Boston Symphony Hall which is the main reason why its acoustics are renowned. See linked picture. Ā https://www.architecture.com/image-library/RIBApix/image-information/poster/watford-town-hall-hertfordshire-the-assembly-hall/posterid/RIBA73866.html Thanks for the corrections. It has been many years since I saw the name. You are correct, it is Watford town hall. I misremembered. And havingĀ never been there, I didnātĀ realize that it was in Erie and not Olā Blighty. Again, thanks for straightening that out for an ignorant American. I really do appreciate it! George Link to comment
