Building a DIY Music Server

Same experience with me. Didn’t like the HDplex 500W. Performance was very disappointing. I like a trio of Keces P8. Alternatively, Teradak but only if you like a sound on the “harder” side of things.

Mine was a let down at first, but after doing the following:

- use short cables, not the ridiculously long ones provided

- use both CPU and PCIE to CPU EPS sockets (big difference, and more even heat distribution on heatsink after)

- change internal fuse, really opened things up this

- disable turbo mode for CPU

- gave it at least a month+ to settle, left it on 24x7 (tons of caps in there)

- better anti-vibration feet

It was much better than switching a standard ATX PSU in.

Having said that the Taiko DC DC naturally shows it the door; my CPU is easily consuming 6A+ on load with ease.

The units shipped to me had build defects as well unfortunately which put me off using it.

Hi guys i want your opinion on my next move regarding my server.

I m really undecided and cant take the decision.

My server is based on the z390 phantom mb with i9 9900k cpu,hd800,jcat usb,e and lan femto ,euphony os,with 2 keces p8 ulps.

All cables are upgraded to the silver version by nenon.

My current dac,is spdif input only.

I have 2 options:

Go with the recommended upgrade path by nenon wich is taiko atx+v2+jcat xe plus audio gd he20 usb to spdif converter.

Thus solution is going to cost me=4450 euro.

Or option 2 ,install pf ultra oxco spdif bridge with windows 10 pro and fidelizer pro + taiko atx+v2 wich gonna cost me=4000 euro also.

What option will you choose?

Pink Faun may not work well with Intel, do check before buying....other than that and without having auditioned both options: I am in favor of less is more so so would be inclined to go with the second option IF you have a good linear PSU for the PF card!

ISP, glass to Fritz!box 5530, another Fritz!box 5530 for audio only in bridged mode on LPS, cat8.1, Zyxel switch on LPS, Finisar <1475BTL>Solarflare X2522-25G, external wifi AP, AMD 9 16 core, passive cooling ,Aorus Master x570, LPSU with Taiko ATX, 8Gb Apacer RAM, femto SSD on LPS, Pink Faun I2S ultra OCXO on akiko LPS, home grown RJ45 I2S cable, Metrum Adagio DAC3, RCA 70-A and Miyaima Zero for mono, G2 PL519 tube amps.

Thks for the reply.

I m thinking same as you, less usb/spdif  converter on the chain should be the best.

But my server is tweaked for usb output and that s why my doubts.

Jord of pf is confident it s gonna work on intel with windows pro.

I dont have yet a very good 5v lps for the pf.

Nenon at some point said earlier that the pf ultra oxco is better than jcat usb xe but not worth the extra money..

The only thing stopping me is that my hole server/ streamer was built by nenon to perform the best thru usb,and even the taiko atx+ v2 are tested with jcat usb xe ...

Could a different DAC with USB input be a possible option?

Nope unfortunately.

The dac i have is just 1 ,5 month old and is amazing for the money.

I m considering also another option though, wich is installing jlsounds usb card on it.

Hi Sakso,

My opinion would be to sell your streamer  "as is" because it is good for USB  dac

and buy a used one with AMD (from Longinc in the classified), where you will be able to put a PinkFaun Spdif bridge with Euphony and add the Taiko dc-atx :)

I have to tell you that the Gaia D2D with a Revelation Audio I2S cable is truely a match made in heaven.  I am using it with a z390 phantom mb, passively cooled i9 9900k, with plenty of Apacer select industrial ram , JCAT net Xe, and a Nenon’s recommended unregulated power supply Takio DC regulator board combination.   The SQ is so many leagues above anything I have ever heard anywhere before that I wouldn’t believe it if I wasn’t hearing it for myself.  My mind is bogged to try and imagine how Nenon’s  and Austinpop’s assurances that there is even better SQ to be had with the Takio Extreme🤪🤯.

I would suggest that you get a Takio DC regulator board for your existing server, add a Gaia with Revelation Audio cable, and happily enjoy the bliss.

As for me, my plan is to continue collecting the parts to build Nenon’s Takio DIY server as it comes to fruition, to be my endgame server, and to which I will be transferring the JCAT net XE card and Takio DC regulator board.  Of course, if I were to win the lottery, I would simply buy a Takio Extreme server as a complete turn key solution 🤞.

SB88200 cable modem,  EdgeRouterX SFP router,  2 series PFU Buffalo BS-GS2016 switches w/ SR7T LPS and Finisar FTLX1475D3BTL SFPs, Taiko NetCard, JCAT USBCard XE w/ JCAT Optimo 3 Duo LPS;  DIY Taiko Extreme w/ Taiko DC-ATX, and Nenon design Level 3 supply;  Denafrips GAIA DDC w/ Revelation Audio Prophecy Cryro Silver I2S connection to Denafrips Terminator Plus DAC;  modified Pass Labs XP22 preamp,  Pass X600.8 monoblocks,  restored and modified Sound Lab M-1 electrostats with hot rod backplates

Hi,

For coax nenon is highly recommnding high fidelity ct2

For me, the SU-6 with its OCXO and built in ultracacap LPS was a much better way to go than the SU-2 modified to use an external LPS.  When I later upgraded the SU-6 with all AudioNote Kaisei caps it improved its SQ considerably.

However, the Gaia with Revelation Audio I2S is in an entirely different league all together.   My Terminator Plus is quite good without the Gaia and Revelation Audio I2S, but with it, the SQ is so much more realistic and immersive that I could never go back to just the Terminator Plus alone.

Check out the design and construction of Gaia on the Vinshine Audio for details of its OCXO, usb discrete input circuitry (as opposed to the XMOS processor chip used in the Singxer products), and it’s high end power supply.  Like the Terminator Plus, it punches way above its price point.

Ok,ill check the gaia.

The su1 i have is moded by ghent audio to be used with external ps.

I m using it with ultracap 1.5 lps sonore dc cable.

On the other thread here regarding the audio gd many said it is also on a total different league than the singxer.

Unless I’m mistaken, the su1 uses a 1st gen XMOS chip that has long been discontinued, the su2 uses a 2nd gen chip (with about twice the processing power), and both of them need modification to enable the use of an external LPS to really shine.  The su6 uses the latest generation XMOS, has other circuitry enhancements, and  has a built in supercapacitor LPS.

FYI - the latest version 208 of MinorityClean should have hit the "jackpot"

http://jplay.eu/forum/index.php?/topic/3063-pink-hq-minorityclean/?view=getlastpost

Quote

208 still more euphonic and exciting than previous versions.

It has incredible transient response, ultra-massive, deeeeeep bass and super-open and exciting highs. Instruments are perfectly separated. Everything feels so alive. Everything is so detailed.

It is so exciting it makes me want to jump to the rhytm.

OryA is on fire again. Every version since 205 brings massive improvement

Hi guys..,
I have now tried 208 and like it pretty much.
First impression, everything got more into focus. Soundstage with better resolution and precise/focus imaging. Bass hits tighter and even more impactful. I will let it runs for next 24hrs and revisit my preliminary observations.
This is fantastic…!

Here's a script created by HungryBear on another forum

http://jplay.eu/forum/index.php?/topic/3063-pink-hq-minorityclean/?p=54544

Quote

The script will now start multiple instances of MinorityClean with NT Authority / System privileges, and then automatically terminate the NSSM.exe application.

Which will give you all the benefits of running MinorityClean, but with significantly less memory usage, significantly less CPU usage, and fewer processes, threads and handles running in your system.

Which means better sound for you!

For the reasons mentioned above, this method is better than the sexe64 or Fidelizer method, even if you run just one instance of MinorityClean.

I can confirm that HB's script is working well. Only MC is running....even on Win 11!

Service User Accounts

IMHO it's mighty interesting to launch an application as System or TrustInstaller etc. since those Service User Accounts should be relatively clean when compared to the regular ones such as local administrator.

It's less likely to have a cluttered registry hive associated with those accounts, while no user profiles could be found under the C:\Users directory.

DIY-ing is easy enough, you need a good (!) crimping tool for the molex pins and play a bit around to make the crimping work as needed.

I ended up making mine as the Ghent cable I ordered did not fit the PSU I'm using (all cables are connected straight but my PSU has 180"rotated connectors), takes about an hour to make both cables if it's a straight connection.)
