lpost
Does anyone know the differences between the Wildism versions and the KTE version? I don't find much if anything on the Wildism version. I've emailed Jo Jo a couple days ago but have yet to receive a reply. I don't do Facebook so that's a non-starter for me. Link to comment
Popular Post lpost
I'm sure we all come at this decision from different points of view and positions in life. I decided on the KTE version for much the same reason as @Hiker I have experienced how 'better' components can and do improve the sound. Not so much from a tuning perspective, and choosing to use the word tuned probably isn't the best, but from a clarity, extension, hearing deeper into the recording. I also have the means to help support boutique makers like Jeff and company. I don't mind giving them a bit more profit to enable them to keep doing what they do! I bought a Pink Faun server 3 years ago for the same motives. I could have built my own PC and added several great power supplies but I liked their execution and wanted to help support the effort, the work, their livelihood. I still enjoy the PF every single day. I've had a very successful 30 year career, saved aggressively and invested 'lucky' mostly. My position in life affords me these simple pleasures or excesses if you will. I'm confident any level of May will sound absolutely fabulous and without living for weeks with more than one version I'm also confident I likely could never tell the difference. Are they creating levels to generate more profit? I sure hope so. It's good for business! Enjoy the music my friends. OgOgilby, Diavolo, Hiker and 1 other 4 Link to comment

lpost
Good stuff. Review prep? I'm thinking USB shouldn't use the PLL whether it's enabled or not as the DAC provides the clock for USB. It wouldn't make much sense to PLL it's own clock... Can you hear any difference between any of them or even the optical without PLL enabled? -10dB at -140dB is very low. Diavolo 1 Link to comment

Perhaps sales are really good :~) I don't think they can build them fast enough to fulfill paid orders with the few reviews out there already. Diavolo 1 Link to comment

Large companies always sacrifice music for dollars :-D Not always but seemingly often. I also think it's important to support small innovators and yes this means waiting longer (or more time to anticipate) and potentially paying a bit more (though often less because the big distribution/sales machine isn't involved, yet). You can have Roon continue PEQ into HQPlayer no problem. However, I find that HQP plays 'cleaner' with PEQ and/or convolution than Roon but it's subtle. Convolution is preferred in my experience over PEQ regardless of where the processing occurs. Link to comment

So ideally I'd like to just leave it running 24/7, but not sure if that's detrimental to cap life or whatnot, maybe negligible? The caps will likely out live all of us. They're not like caps of 40 years ago. Leave it on unless you're going to be away for a few days or more. During the break-in period some find its advantageous to turn off the unit and let it completely cool for 4-5 hours every 5 days or so. Should speed the changes in the caps and other dielectrics but then leave it on all the time for best sound. Link to comment
lpost
I have ATC speakers, Holo May, NRG power cables, Iconoclast interconnects and speaker, and PS Audio preamp, amp and regen. Oh, and Pink Faun streamer. All are very small to small, PS Audio is pretty big but behaves like a small shop in that the customer service (in the US) is absolutely exemplary, above and beyond. Popular Post lpost
Wow, you guys that have the May certainly weren't exaggerating what this device is capable of. I had no idea what I was missing with a modded Directstream DAC and only 13 hours in. Hiker and Diavolo 2 Link to comment
Popular Post lpost
My only other 'real' DAC has been the PS Audio Directstream for the past 3 years. In the last few months I owned it I replaced the transformers and analog power supply. Both opened my ears to better sound but both pale in comparison to the first few hours with the May DAC. No contest. Initial thoughts and feelings. A natural sound that well sounds real to my brain. Dynamics are improved significantly. Decay is silly good, the DS has zero in comparison. Trailing notes or ambient space reflections seems to go on in a very natural way fading as they would in real life. There is an increased feeling of ease despite the increase in dynamics as if the energy is delivered in time much more precisely vs. the DS. Time domain goodness. It just feels right. I don't want to gush too much as I expect there will be some dark break in days to come but I'm confident we'll come through those based on what I've heard already.
