fas42
I could mention an even greater horror 😝, as a playback setup, that I fooled around with for a bit, that used CDs a couple of years ago - an Aldi Blu-Ray player as transport, HDMI to an Aldi LCD TV, and then through the rough speakers below the screen; this was prior to them making sure you can't hear anything, by pointing the speakers in the wrong direction, of course ... but I have sympathy for ST, and don't want to give him more grief than he can bear 😆. Something physical is nice to have around, and if one wants that "old mastering" the chances are good that one can get hold of it. File based brings in this apparent nightmare of connections to the DAC - I'll do without that, for the moment, 🙂. Managing backups isn't particularly hard as music libraries are pretty static once the CDs have been ripped and the metadata tweaked to your liking. Worst case, you retain the physical media. This is nothing to prevent you from having multiple versions of an album in your library. I've got as many as a dozen versions of some albums and I can instantly switch between them. The connection issue is largely a non-issue. Even an entry-level DAC connected with whatever USB cable you've got laying around is going to sound better than almost every CD player out there. And it allows you access to mountains of music that has never been released on CD. I know a few under 44s that buy vinyl. Two of them collect vinyl but don't even own a turntable (they stream free Spotify), another uses one of those plastic briefcase turntables with a single wideband driver, one bought a malfunctioning hi-fi cabinet from the early 60s at a charity store... How can you tell that it doesn't sound flat (through listening)? You have to compare it with other speakers and use recordings that are meant to sound realistic. Ideally you measure. I don’t want my speakers to sound flat 😉. They should measure flat between 20 and 20 KHz thought. PeterSt 1 Link to comment
