EtherREGEN: Installation, Usage, Difficulty, Questions thread

Recommended Posts

You can program the P10 (not sure about other models) to do phased switch-on to the different sockets.  You can therefore have the router come on first, then the source equipment and finally the power amp, with adjustable timings.

I do this, except I have the socket feeding the router set to permanently on to keep it running.  It still gets regenerated power when you turn on the P10.

I would say the cable leaving the ER is the most important, since you don't want to undo the good work by adding noise and jitter back in. Mine is 12cm long.

On the other hand, I would never put ethernet through my power lines.  I do all I can to eliminate mains-borne noise so I'm not going to inject more noise in.  I use two regenerators and a lot of filters to reduce the noise in my mains power.

I'm lucky that I have a dedicated 4G router in my music room, so I stream over ethernet cable, not wi-fi.  Sound quality from Qobuz is superb.

does it matter whether said switch is actually a WiFi router, and that it gets the music for the renderer over a wifi connection?

No and Yes.

The only switch I have in my system before the ER is my 4G/wi-fi router.  However, and this is important, the music stream goes via ethernet cable and across the ER's moat, gaining the full effect of the ER.  Sending music across the wi-fi bypasses the ER completely and, even if you used an AP on the other side of the moat, wi-fi by its very nature is laggy and jittery so you would be putting the crap back in that the ER removed.

It's not the bit-perfect nature of wi-fi that causes the issues, otherwise wi-fi streaming would be unusable.  The ER strips out noise and jitter from the ethernet data to render a cleaner ethernet feed.  Wi-Fi adds some of that noise and jitter back in.  Unless, of course, you were to add an ER on the other side of the wi-fi feed, but that's too convoluted to consider as a solution.

I bought a very similar (but slightly smaller) heatsink on eBay and have installed it today using double-sided heat-conducting tape.  I shall keep tabs on the ER case temperature and hope it will keep it somewhat cooler.

I agree with the above, I attached a heatsink to mine to prolong its operational life, not because I think you could hear any sound quality differences.

No, but I do have two reclockers in the chain, an ER and a Mutec MC-3+ USB.  I can say with some confidence that double reclocking gives more musical performance.  Going further and adding a master clock gives even more.

Alex believes that the microRendu green light relates to 1Gb connections, whereas the B side of the EtherRegen is 100Mb.  So, it may well be normal operation for the green light not to be on when using a microRendu through an EtherRegen.  I will test and/or confirm this with the Sonore/SGC folks.  Cheers.  JCR

The microRendu *may* be different, but my ultraRendu LED goes green when fed from the B side of the ER.

I used to have an Acoustic Revive RLI-1 LAN isolator inserted before I had the ER. Couldn't hear it do anything on the A side with the ER so I got rid of it.

I would say they're both important, B side more so.  Use a good quality cable for the A side (mine's a MeiCord) and the best shortest one for B side (I use a 12cm Rhino Cat6 link).
