DavidL
OK I guess we're not allowed to talk about Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald but I suggest we should use these great singers as references for more recent ones. I certainly agree with the choices made in the article. I'd add Veronica Swift who can certainly stand comparison with the above icons. I do have a problem with many recordings of current singers - they have been compressed, presumably to sound louder and compete in the pop music market. JoeWhip
I did not include Ella or Sarah because I think everyone knows about them. In the future I could do an article on my favorite recording by them as well. Link to comment
Popular Post daverich4
I’m a big fan of Nicki Parrott who, along with a great voice, is a talented standup bass player. Last year my wife and I went to the three day North Carolina Jazz Festival just to catch her one hour set. The Computer Audiophile and kumakuma 2 Link to comment
lestes
Joe - I really enjoyed the lineup as always. A few other contemporaries that I have enjoyed: Gretchen Parlato's Live in NYC; Diana Panton's If the Moon Turns Green; Sophie Milman's self titled Sophie Milman album. All 3 are available on Tidal and each has helped me form a baseline for my system. Cheers kumakuma 1 Link to comment

Popular Post Musicophile
I’d certainly suggest adding Cecile McLorin Salvant to this list. Popular Post LoryWiv
Not a jazz singer but Sandy Denny, late of Fairport Convention, has the purest instrument and conveys emotion to match. Her version of the song she wrote," Who Knows Where the Time Goes" on the "Unhalfbricking" album is my gold standard test track for female vocals. Her voice sounds magnificent on good equipment even encoded in humble 16 / 44.1 FLAC and despite the recording being 50 years old. Popular Post bluesman
Great stuff! I love them all. I’d add two of my favorites: Cyrille Aimée and Nancy Wilson. Both voices are pure as a newborn baby, and both artists are masters of their instruments. They’re truly unique - once you hear them, you know it when you hear them again. Another fascinating female vocalist is Patty Cathcart. Her recordings with her husband Tuck Andress (dba Tuck and Patty) are wonderful music and excellent reference and demo source material. Tuck is an amazing guitarist whose playing, sound, and repertoire are all stellar both solo and backing his wife. audio.bill and DuckToller 2 Link to comment
