If you buy a new Mac, do you think you are going to be able to run something like El Capitan on it? I'm pretty sure you won't be able to, because old versions of macOS cannot support hardware newer than the OS... It is sort of futile exercise to stick to some ancient OS version, apart from many potential security problems. At most you can stick to current minus one. Ralf11
Lots of systems available used or as refurbs in the Apple Store. It won't be futile for several years. Link to comment

Refurbs in Apple Store? Never seen such... Do you mean a physical Apple Store? There's no such anywhere within several hundred km or maybe even over 1000 km. Also newer versions of applications won't support older versions of macOS. For example development tools I use now support minimum 10.13. Of course one can stick with everything-old. My old Mac Mini won't get OS udpates anymore (security problem). And the old iMac is so horribly slow that it is not so useful anymore. So I switched to a new iMac with i9-9900K it is sooo much faster - and runs Mojave minimum. Signalyst - Developer of HQPlayer Pulse & Fidelity - Software Defined Amplifiers Link to comment
Ralf11
it's online - go to the bottom of their web page also, in case you didn't notice... Apple isn't exactly at the leading edge of technological advancement these days... Link to comment

Apple isn't exactly at the leading edge of technological advancement these days... Can you describe what you mean in more detail? Who is? Apple computers are PC's tailored for their ambitions. Nothing particularly fancy, but compared to HP, Dell, Lenovo and others, pretty much on the line if we talk about ordinary laptops/desktops. For datacenter hardware and software not, but I don't think that's their goal overall. bobbmd
@Miskawhat i have twice now is removed the original 1TB HD from my late 2012 mac mini replaced it with a WD 2TB hd and recently replaced that with a 4TB WD SSD HD superfast efficient( done at a certified Apple repair store never go to an Apple store) kept my OS as el capital and like @wgscott just listen to music from TIDAL Qobuz or use ROON/A+3 and do few other thing mail searches and my EMR all my photos are there etc and i have made 4 different backups plus 3 older HD's again why upgrade and risk Apple 'playing' with your music listening enjoyment just so you can have access to 50000 new emojis and 'security' have never had an issue with that use malwarebytes and never open anything that is suspicious or sketchy Link to comment

Not on the web page, or in the store app. Only new hardware. Do they really sell over 2 - 5 year old discontinued hardware models there? 9 hours ago, bobbmd said: @Miskawhat i have twice now is removed the original 1TB HD from my late 2012 mac mini replaced it with a WD 2TB hd and recently replaced that with a 4TB WD SSD HD superfast efficient( done at a certified Apple repair store never go to an Apple store) kept my OS as el capital and like @wgscott just listen to music from TIDAL Qobuz or use ROON/A+3 and do few other thing mail searches and my EMR all my photos are there etc and i have made 4 different backups plus 3 older HD's again why upgrade and risk Apple 'playing' with your music listening enjoyment just so you can have access to 50000 new emojis and 'security' have never had an issue with that use malwarebytes and never open anything that is suspicious or sketchy I have 2011 Mac Mini and have always kept it up to date. Now it is stuck at High Sierra because Apple has discontinued support for it. So now I will recycle it, it is anyway just a dual-core i5. To be replaced by the 2012 iMac that just got retired from development machine job, which is running Mojave. I will eventually replace it with another new iMac so that I can run Catalina and newer. macOS has been getting better performance-wise. I don't care about emojis, but performance and features of the core OS has been getting better. For example HQPlayer cannot run on El Capitan because I'm using OS features Apple added in Sierra. You probably cannot even open the DMG on El Capitan, because it is compressed with a more efficient compression algorithm that is not supported by older macOS versions. Next release is limited to High Sierra, because newest development tools don't support older versions anymore. Eventually I will also drop support for older hardware models for performance reasons. Things they talk about in launch events are such like emojis, that are visual and something everybody can see. Sometimes they also mention other things like APFS. Since you are using SSD, you certainly should be using APFS filesystem on it, instead of ancient HFS. They also make lot of improvements and new features to the core OS itself, which are directly visible only to developers. They don't talk about such in the launch events because everybody else except developer would be bored to death listening it. matthias and AnotherSpin 1 1 Signalyst - Developer of HQPlayer Pulse & Fidelity - Software Defined Amplifiers Link to comment
