"Free" has a distinct meaning in software, which usually means it is non-proprietary and that the source code is made available to anyone who wants it to compile it, inspect it, modify it, branch from it, etc. iTunes, for example, can be downloaded with zero cost, but it is not "Freeware" because it is closed-source and proprietary.
