I’ve never quite bought into the whole Schiit thing, but hats off to them, this looks to be an interesting new product and potentially great value for money: https://www.schiit.com/products/sol

Looking forward to the reviews.

Schiit is into Norse mythology for product names. Sol refers to a Norse sun goddess while the phono amp Mani is a reference to the moon.

Please - it was a joke albeit a poor one..... :D

The joke was obvious enough it needed to be got out of the way.

A silver tinged black sun, hmm.  Going to continue casting my net on the other side of the boat where there are plenty of healthy fish in the sea.  Darko, and his boatload of SEO followers, can have at that catch.

It's a $799 turntable that looks pretty similar to a $3,000 Rega Planar 8. I will be very interested to see what kind of coverage/reviews Stereophile and AnalogPlanet give to the SOL.

There's a little bit too much of a DIY/science project vibe to the SOL for my taste. [Though it would not look out of place in a pix of one of Fremer's setups, poor cousin though it might be.]

Most importantly, I do wonder how heavy the SOL's motor is, and whether it will vibrate out of position. Seems like a great opportunity for some kind of aftermarket cutting board [excuse me; I guess I should call it a plinth] with indents for both those platter support legs and the motor, to create an integrated turntable mounting system [and of course the aftermarketer could add a dust cover to it]. Of course, then it would no longer look like a Planar 8.

As for the name, I think the fact that 'SOL' immediately brings to mind that three letter street expression is a feature, not a bug.

Interesting point about the motor. I have a Marantz TT-15S1 and the motor would move if not held in place by the plinth (the motor sits in a hole in the plinth). It would be interesting to see reviews of it..

It reminds me of a British TT but the tripod legs are not long enough. I wonder how stable it will be.

If you follow the kickstarter updates they are only shipping about three a month. I would avoid Mag Lev like the plague. If you have the turntable itch just get a Sol and enjoy it.

I would love to hear a Sol, but in my system. Something I am used to and how it sounds would be directly related to the change in equipment. Hearing it at a show, is a hint, but not a real picture of it.

The Maglev, seems to me, would cause more issues than it fixes. How do they isolate the maglev part from the cartridge?

I have that exact question, and was what I was referring to above when I mentioned that although I see how it could be done there would be a lot of things yet to overcome.

I was just stating the obvious :D

In addition to the low torque, the thing that really bothered me is that there's no indent/groove machined into the platter for the belt to rest in. So it's just sitting on the outside of the platter, like on some of the lower Pro-ject TTs. So one will always have to be on the lookout for 'belt droop.'

While I could live with the push start, I can't abide having to deal with the rubber band [sorry, belt] constantly threatening to fall off the platter. I would guess this also makes setting the motor location somewhat more difficult, since as you get to the point where tension starts to loosen, your belt is gonna start to drop off.

Anyone have any experience with belt setups like this, with no detent/groove to stabilize the belt?

Many TT's have them. My Marantz has the same design but no issues.
