Popular Post PeterSt
I have been reluctant to post myself, trying to avoid self-advertising. Still, if there is one person who should know from various angles, it should be me. So here goes after all, in a hopefully neutral fashion. Honest it is anyway (those following our products from the past ~14 years will just know). I started the XXHighEnd software. It had one purpose: know for myself that nothing anomalous would be in there, knowing that all playback software back at the time sounded different, without knowing the reason of why. Soon I discovered that I could let sound the -anyway- bit perfect software different and the differences were very similar to everybody (back then a say 500 users). 2-3 years into the software I found it ridiculous that software (still bit-perfect) could do this to a DAC or whatever it was which was influenced, and I started to design a DAC which would counter-attack the differences. It failed. A next version, now with async USB interface, also failed on that. And a next version, the first on the globe with galvanic isolation in the i2s path, failed again. I came up with S/N #00001 of the Intona (very first high speed USB galvanic isolator). It didn't help. Later, again a world's first with now also galvanic isolation in-DAC in the USB path, failed. To date, It still fails. Inserted ISO REGEN devices ... also to no avail. Nothing helps (and those who claim it is about poor DAC design, send me a decent one - you will get it back - promise 😁). I know exactly what I am doing with the software. I know exactly what I can or should do (and do) with the DAC. With the PC the same. But I still can't defeat it. The past years (say 3-5) I now use the empirical findings and made a virtue out of this "knowledge". The current USB cables bring new data points to the extreme (they are configurable): the result per configuration sounds the same (or very similar at least) to everyone. Regardless source and DAC. I think the PC and DAC we provide are top-notch regarding noise aspects and shielding and what not. The XXHighEnd software is, sadly, top-notch in influencing the noise aspects, never mind how low the noise is (or maybe because the noise is so low already - think about this). A USB cable turns out to be the very best in influencing the lot even more. The fact that it works with variable shielding, tells it all; This is not about isolation or filtering of noise and more in this realm ... it is about radiation. Radiation and antenna working. This thus also includes decent grounding, whatever that means in this context (think about additional complexity with galvanic isolation in order). So for @Ralf11, the best USB cable is the one which lets your system perform best. Yes, your system as a whole. It has few to do with the data the USB cable transports (think eye etc.), although that too plays an inherent role (see Original Lush thread, no need to go into that again). In all cases the cable transports without protocol/data errors at the highest speed with music data (not test signals, and we check this explicitly per cable for 10-15 minutes). That's all.
