The goal being to enable each component to be optimized for and focus on a single thing. And also to be able to spend more money where it counts and less where it doesn't. 

This is the same configuration I have been thinking lately as well.  Seems to be a better way to upgrade my system by adding a HQP server to run the new EC modulators while leaving the optimized Roon server and endpoint as is.
