Reliability of PCM1704 DAC chip

Strange...

All I notice is that these are PCM1704 and not PCM1704U-K.

Do you happen to know how these fail?

Fake?

Plenty. Bought from eBay and got fake ( non working). Shipped from China. There are plenty of caps which are either fake or imitation.

Fake as in random IC with same package relabelled as PCM1704? I didn't realise there was enough demand for these obsolete chips for anyone to bother with such scams.

Order another set. And they are not cheap. Hopefully these are genuine.

If you are buying for such ridiculous prices, you can buy just as well from me. USD 40 for the U-K version. Plus shipping.

Thanks. Someone from UK is coming over this weekend. Will ask if he could collect it from you. How many can you supply?

As many as you like. But I like to keep a few for myself. 🤣

But sadly no-go for this weekend (we are all out for a break).

Back on topic, we never had a single one broken or anything. And the advice which goes with our DACs is to have it On 24/7.

So "stop working"?

Could you please PM your contact details?  BTW, are you a manufacturer?

From my friend’s friend. :)
Our own experience shows that PCM 1704 does not like uneven powering up of the + and - psu rails

When our DAC is being build, a lot can go wrong. The foremost is supply (regulation) problems. They occur when there's somewhat more current demand - hence when all consumers are connected. This includes no plus or no minus or plus where minus should be.

Still no destructive issues anywhere, ever.

It is regularly faked/pirated chip, some fakes are even functional but may be practically something totally different than one would expect. Similar thing for some opamps and capacitors as well. Relatively expensive and rare audiophile components tend to be subject to such...

Someone with the necessary resources should make a pin-compatible chip with a modern sigma-delta DAC inside. Then sell it with fake markings and see if anyone notices.

Some of the fakes may be just that...
