Apple TV software upgrade new icon

This is part venting and information sharing.

My set up is very simple.  I have a mac book pro, a mac mini, an Apple TV, a Samsung TV and an Onkyo AV receiver.

I have been able for several years to turn on the Apple TV, and go to an icon "Music".  Listed in that screen was my mac book iTunes library and the mac mini library.  The mac mini is connected to my network by ethernet cable as is the Apple TV.  When I selected the mac mini library the library instantly loaded and I could find artist, album or playlist(s).

 

Yesterday the Apple TV (generation 3) automatically upgraded the os.  When I went to music icon, the only selection was to turn off home sharing.  I spent the next hour resetting my appleid, on all my computers and the Apple TV.  But still could not get the libraries to display.  So, I called Apple tech support using the mac mini apple care account.

I spent 2.5 hours with tech support trying to load the libraries.  We did screen sharing on both computers.  We shut down every device including the Apple Airpot router. We were able to launch each computer's screen to the Apple TV.  But no iTunes library showed up?

 

He took a 30 minute break and called me back.

He had done some research and spoke with other techs.  They informed him that the new version of the Apple TV os has a new icon "computers" at the bottom of the screen.  This icon cannot be moved to the top of the Apple TV screen and the operation seems much slower than previously. I wonder if this is all part of the iTunes breakup?

Hello cambridgehank, here quite the same configuration, 3 gen Apple TV and Samsung tv (an old 32’). 

My Apple TV updated today but the computer icon is on the first row ... I’m in Italy ... differences due to country?

I've always clicked on the yellow computer icon, then gone to my music files from there - using WiFi ApplePlay to the apple tv3; have not tried today but I always dread Appul's "upgrades" as they break things.

Thanks, I never knew there was a yellow computer icon.

post back if that doesn't work - I have fear of upgrading so dunno what will happen this evening...

I have turned off automatic updates on the Apple TV.  And, I now know where to find the yellow icon.  Thanks

I survived the upgrade but Snapple moved the Computer icon to the end.

 

Go down there, and hold press the button the icon until all icons start to jitter, then you can move it up to the top and deep six the Apple Events fan boi icon to the bottom.

I could not move the icon to the very top line. Apple Events is in that line also.

Home Sharing has been in the Computer icon for quite some time. It's possible, however, that they only made the change to the gen 3 model recently. I recall it being jarring the first time I saw it, but I don't recall it being at the bottom of the screen. I'm surprised that AppleCare couldn't help you figure this out.

I know, but they should have understood immediately what was happening. 

 

I've found that Apple support is no longer what it used to be. I've had some very bad experiences in recent times.
