AudioDoctor
Interesting... Does the price include the box and the headphones? No electron left behind. Link to comment
Popular Post jhwalker
Thanks, have been looking for info on these (hinted at on another website a couple weeks back). Let's see: new car, new headphones ... new car, new headphones ... That cover photo, though - perspective distortion makes them look about the size of a football. Yes, they plan to offer it as a total system. This is along the same lines as the far more expensive Sennheiser HE-1. But that said, I was curious about flexibility and was pleased to learn that while you can use the builtin DAC via the usual digital inputs, as well as Ethernet (including, if I'm remembering correctly, Roon endpoint support), they also offer SE and balanced analog inputs to support any external DAC. Building on Chris' article, I too was invited to have a listen to this system. What they were displaying was a prototype, so changes are still possible between now and the official launch in Munich. I try to be circumspect when describing what I hear at shows. The true measure of a system or a component can only be made in your own home, integrated with the rest of your system, etc. At best, I look for things that pique my curiosity. With the Aperio, consider my curiosity piqued! I found it extremely resolving, with a sweet treble, and super fast and clean transients. I expect this from high-end eletrostatics. I also heard very tight bass with excellent low-end extension, which is not as common. Caveat: this is on a first listen, so this is not my last word on this headphone system. But in terms of coming away wanting a lot more time with this system - oh yeah! I look forward to getting my hands on a review sample to really put this system through its paces. Ben-M
I don't know if austicpop is feeling the love right now, Chris... 😅 I just heard the HiFiMAN Shangri-la electrostatic headphone system last week and it was crystal, crystal clear. But the entire supporting front end chain was not up to snuff and I don't know if the let down is coming from there or that I prefer a sound with more meat on the bones. In the end, I was satisfied with its clarify and instrument definition, but would never spend the money on them because they didn't 'oil my gears' so to speak. So, it's interesting to hear such a rave teaser coming from you here, at half the price of the HiFiMAN system, and with an integrated frontend. I'm looking forward to Austinpop's in depth feedback. KDinsmore
I'd love to hear this rig. At this price I'd also be looking at Stax SR009S, a Headamp BHSE and either a MSB Discreet DAC(w/power supply) or Chord DAVE. I'd still have $$ left over for a cable splurge. Shoot out is the only way we'll know...........you guys report back! crenca
So, Sonoma Acoustics = Warwick Acoustics? Is this a more expensive/upgraded version of the Model One? On the surface it looks like an effort to monetize the Model One. In any case, I would be interested in an explanation (any explanation) as the pricing/value of this unit... Hey MQA, if it is not all $voodoo$, show us the math! Link to comment
pabe12
Not that I've read this in so many words anywhere ("balanced drive"), but I suspect that this is a version that has TWO stators, one on each side of the diaphragm, just like most other electrostatic headphones. The model One is asymmetric with a stator only on one side. The model One requires heavy DSP to sound reasonably neutral, and quickly went into overload/saturation. With double stators on the new model, perhaps the DSP doesn't need to be that extensive, and it may help with the maximum volume too. Link to comment
Pale Rider
Coming up on release date. I know there have been a couple of (unsurprisingly—read into that what you will) enthusiastic reviews, but have not heard much else. Anyone else take the plunge? All the toys are in my profile.
