Operating Headless mac mini from Windows PC

Recommended Posts

I have been viewing and managing files in mac mini through my windows desktop for many years. Now I suddenly find that after moving to Windows 10, I am no more able to view mac files and manage them from my windows PC. I have tried the following:

  1. making sure that all computers are on the same workgroup

  2. enabling all sharing in mac

  3. logging in from the mac to the windows PC shown on the sidebar in Finder (this enables me to see windows pc files on mac, but what I want is the opposite).

I do realize that these two companies are actively creating walls wherever possible. But is there a workaround in this case?

The goal is to use my mac mini in headless mode as a music server playing Audirvana/JRiver etc. using apps on iPad, and use windows PC to do file management. The file management part is now getting obstructed.

A few thoughts and questions.

Can you give some more information of how the shares and permissions are set up on the Mac that is your music server? Sharing an entire drive or sharing a folder / connecting from Guest account, User account, Admin account?

What version of Mac OS is running on the machine you want to connect to from the Windows 10 PC?

Is "Share files and folders using SMB" selected under the Options button in file sharing?

Are you using a VNC client on the PC(s) to connect to Mac Screen Sharing, or only trying to manage files on shares?

Hi Recordgeek, Daccord, I solved all those problems. Now everything is connected, and in fact, I have chosen to entirely disable file sharing, BT, wifi by modifying the OSx itself, and I have large improvements to report. In case it is useful, here are some links with the codes I implemented...

There are many more, if one googles, which you can use to scour the mac mini.
