Euphony OS w/Stylus player setup and issues thread

I'm having trouble getting the pcm 1411/1536 to work with HQP on euphony , either as alsa or as NAA. I have a holo spring 3 KTE (usb).  Works perfectly with Miska's HQPlayer OS / NAA images

I wrote to Euphony support and found that the HQPlayer Embedded Web interface is accessible at http://euphony.local:8089 (IP:8089) or by clicking on HQPlayer icon in Euphony settings (only on desktop browser). 

 

Username and password are both "euphony". 

 

In this way I solve the problem of distorted sound with pcm >705/768 by setting the "Dac Bits" parameter to 16 in hqplayer embedded configuration! This allows it to work with pcm 1411/1536! 

 

This allows you to see and modify all the parameters of hqplayer embedded on euphony, set alsa or naa buffer, set the fixed volume for example to -6db and be able to select the new filters gauss, sync-mx etc that otherwise would not be selectable from the interface of euphony! 

 

Absolutely amazing!

Yes. Pcm 1411/1536 on HQPlayer works only with dac bits set to 16 due to Linux limitation. (also on Mac) 

 

Pcm 1411/1536 with dac bits > 16 works only on Jussi's HQPlayer OS or NAA images

Actually I think it's a matter of preference.

I have a Spring 3 KTE.

 

For me PCM 1536/16 sounds very similar to the DSD256 7EC Sinc M. A more backward and relaxed sound with a blacker feel and a little more depth.

 

PCM 768/20 instead sounds more alive, richer harmonically even if more advanced and with less black.

 

In my opinion I prefer PCM 768/20 because it is more engaging.

Point of this exercise is to use HQPlayer Embedded standalone without Euphony involvement. Make sure you save HQPlayer settings in HQPlayer web interface!

 

I follow with interest. I too have the same result as Ricky. I also tried to activate hqplayer embedded only in the euphony settings (and saved hqp settings on WI) but mconnect only sees my tv.

Ho appena scoperto la causa della conversione del flusso di input, sia da file locali che da streaming come qobuz, a 16 bit su eufonia quando HQPlayer è attivato. 

 

Il flag "Converti formati non DSD" DEVE ESSERE DISABILITATO! . 

 

 

Ho anche notato che comunque l'output di hqplayer era corretto anche se era mostrato sbagliato su eufonia.

Uso "Dac Bits impostato su 20 con il mio KTE Spring 3. Se il flag era attivo in Euphony posso vedere 16/192 - 16/768 (uso l'upsampling), ma nell'interfaccia web Embedded in output posso vedere il corretto formato impostato da 768/20/2.

Ciò che effettivamente cambia attivando quel flag è che converte tutto il flusso di input a 16 bit, e ciò accade effettivamente, perché l'input di hqplayer nel WI mostra 192/16/2 - 768/20/2 (con sovracampionamento in questo caso)

I found that hqplayer converts streams from qobuz to 16-bit.

 

Example: a file from qobuz 24/96 becomes 16/96 in input if hqplayer is used.

 

This does not happen with local files.

 

Example: a local 24/96 file in hqplayer input remains 24/96

If unsure whether it is HQPlayer or Euphony related, please boot the HQPlayer OS image and check with it first.

 

No, my dac is Spring 3 KTE. 

 

In Euphony, if I play a 24/96 file from Qobuz, in the HQPe WI it shows 16/96/2 as input format.

 

This does not happen with local files.

On Euphony, If I play a local file 24/96, on HQPe WI at input format I can see 96/24/2 and in output I can see 768/20/2.

If I play the same file, but this time from Qobuz instead HD, in HQPe WI i can see 96/16/2 as input format, and output is 768/20/2.

I found that when upsampling with HQP the stream is converted to 16bit. If you play with HQP but with original samplerate (without Resampling) this problem does not occur, the track shows 24 bits in input in the HQPe web interface.

I've tested both Intel optane ssd, M10 32gb and H10 32+1tb and Samsung 970 evo plus 512gb with the same euphony installation (cloned). 

The result is that the M10 sounds the best of all.  Much better than Samsung and better than H10.  The same result with both Ram Root and without.  Therefore the quality of the SSD is also perceptible with the ram system.  I easily chose intel optane M10 32gb and use an external USB 3.2 type-c Lacie D2 8TB linear drive for storage.

In the past I had espoused this theory of separating core from endpoint via lan, all powered in linear, including router, switch etc .. but recently comparing with a very powerful single pc solution (i9 9900k) with Hdplex dc atx 400w, jcat usb xe , the single pc sounds much better in my experience.  I suspect the lan network introduces more disturbances than benefits.

Okay.. thanks, my endpoint is a melco and melco does not support sqL I’ll try it. 

If your melco EP has an OS other than Euphony (or Euphony EP), you should only use the Roon Core option in Euphony.

It's definitely an early beta. It can only be run directly from a USB stick and there are a number of features that haven't been enabled yet. But it's here before 2023! Praise the digital gods.

Hi guys, 

I noticed that the tracks from the streaming (qobuz or tidal) are no longer buffered ..

If I play and disconnect the network cable, playback stops after about ten seconds.  

I'm on v4 and latest build 529 with HQPe.  

On v3 it buffered 2 consecutive tracks from streaming. 

 

I set the system in ram and all parameters that I had on v3, including core isolation and irq.

I cannot set a fixed frequency of my cpu, (it is no longer a text field but a drop-down menu where I can only select 0 or 3700000 on a Ryzen 9 5900X).In any case, the CPU frequency fluctuates even if you set 3700000.

But these are things that can be easily fixed.

 

Maybe I was expecting a renewed ui to be honest.

In any case, everything else works well for me (including nic Solarflare x2522, jcat usb XE etc.. ) despite being a beta and above all sounds very good, (probably better but certainly not worse!) which is not so obvious to me as it has changed so much the system with the new kernels, HQPe binaries finally upgradeable (spectacular!) etc.. 

All in all for me the V4 is promoted!

Question:

What will happen when the trial period of this V4 expires?

 

I registered the trial for v4 with the same email address I registered my V3 license with. So I would like to keep the same address in the future for the v4 license, I don't want to have to use a different one.

Will it be possible to request another trial or extension with the same email address?

Quite a significant SQ increase, easily noticeable.

Also for me the increase in SQ is really impressive with the v4 compared to the v3, it almost seems to have changed the dac.

Yesterday I was trying a 3 PC setup:

PC #1 - server: Roon Core on ROCK or Euphony in Roon Core mode

PC #2 - renderer: Euphony in HQP embedded mode or in Stylus/HQP mode (does not really matter in terms of sound quality)

PC #3 - endpoint: Rpi4 with Allo Digione Sig. running Ropieee XL

PC's #2 and #3 are also powered with linear power supply, PC #1 not yet

 

I always have to stream to a NAA endpoint out of Euphony as the only option for me as I don't have USB DAC and can't use any add-on cards (PC#1 and #2 are Intel NUC's)

 

When I first started listening tests of the v4 beta, I first started with PC#2 running in Stylus/HQP mode streaming to PC#3 endpoint only. The sound was great to me and pretty much as everyone in this thread describes, so won't comment that further. But then I wanted to add Roon into the system as I have the lifetime licence and really want to use Roon's interface that is much more comfortable for me than Stylus. So I have set up PC #1 with Roon running on ROCK first and started to control PC #2 with that - the sound got worse quite a lot when compared to playing only from PC #2 in Stylus/HQP mode. Then I have installed Euphony v4 beta in Roon Core mode on the PC #1 as well - the sound quality got very close vs. playing from PC #2 in Stylus/HQP only and it's now actually quite difficult for me to choose which one is better. The sound of PC #2 only in this direct comparison is very much as you describe - it's more profound in the high frequencies, which helps to add more detail and resolution, but perhaps it's at a point where it's a bit too much, almost feeling like Stylus is adding something into it that should not be there normally, as if it would have some internal EQ. Yes, there's a bit more detail and stuff, also a bit more punch to the sound, but overall the sound is also thinner, as if the mid and bass frequencies lost a little of the body and weight. Difficult to choose which one is better, but since I want to use Roon, I'm going to keep the PC#1 in Euphony Roon Core mode and control via Roon app all the playback - having this component in the setup does not make things worse, just a bit different. I also plan to purchase linear power supply for PC#1, which should only improve things further.

I advise you to try to use the more powerful nuc between the two you have as an endpoint instead of the rpi ...

From experience I tell you that the power of the cpu is fundamental, the more powerful the better it will sound, the endpoints with low mobile cpu power, especially those based on ARM (a little less those based on mobile x86 such as nucs) gives a thin, light and weightless sound, hollow and decidedly unbalanced in the medium-high, even if powered in linear.

 

Test the nuc with the most powerful CPU you have as an endpoint and you will see that you will not go back.

 

Second, how do you use HQPe? do you upsampling in pcm or dsd or in bit perfect? If you upsampling, which filters, modulators, dither do you use? And with which dac?

 

However, I advise you to use the two nucs without the rasp, on the first you put Roon core + HQPe (localhast), on the more powerful nuc you put the NAA connected to the dac.

Use the rear USB port (or always the fastest available) because it usually sounds better.

Try to power the router linearly too, and use good ethernet cables, the network plays an important role, forget the story that ethernet is galvanically isolated, it's bullshit, you can clearly feel the changes, because in fact it introduces more problems than advantages .

Roon is gorgeous but sadly he makes everything sound bad (maybe, just maybe, it could only sound good on the Taiko SGM Extreme)

 

This is my experience.  

Tested in all possible ways.  

 

If the goal is SQ, take it off.

 

The sooner you understand it, the sooner you get rid of it and avoid wasting time.

I think you must activate the right output!
