Otherwise, how is one to know whether any difference is due to significant variation in the compare file; or, to the comparator's ability to process the files. Link to comment

Ultimately, there's nothing that guarantees that DeltaWave or any other software will always find a perfect alignment in the presence of random or non-random noise. When enough samples are provided, the algorithm will have more to chew on to reduce the effect of noise. 3 seconds at 44.1k is just enough samples for a single FFT. DeltaWave tries to do up to 20 overlapped FFTs to determine clock drift. In the absence of noise, two will be sufficient, but with noise, more are necessary. 30 seconds at 44.1k is just enough samples for 20. The noisier the data, the more samples are needed. What the software does is to give you a number of statistical measures and a visual feedback of how good the match was. Sorry, Tom, I don't seem to be able to reproduce this, no matter what files I try. You are aligning a file to itself, correct? And you turned off all the alignment features in settings. When looking at your result, I don't see any processing being applied to the files, not cross-correlation or gain or drift correction, so I don't understand the large 0.1 second mismatch in the aligned waveforms. Try this: go to Help menu and select Logging -> Debug. Then, run this test again. When finished, go to Help->Logging->View Log menu and copy the text from the log file and upload it for me to look at. Is this anything that if gain adjusted, time aligned, and drift corrected the two files are not identical; which could be because of, say, harmonic distortion, odd glitches, or steady background noise? The new approximate drift correction algorithm I added in 1.0.20 is being used even when all the settings are turned off. It was not designed to be used in this case, so that's a bug. And yet, I still can't reproduce the problem you are seeing. All of the above. Even clock itself is often modulated by various sources of noise. I've seen a clock drift that looks like a sine-wave, for example. DW can't correct for that (at least not easily, I've tried!) The best any algorithm can do in the presence of unknown noise is to use more data to try to average out its effects. But only if the noise is random can any predictions be made about accuracy, and then, only using statistics. Another approach is to try to model non-random noise and to then remove it. If you examine each generation, you'll find that the drift increases by about 0.6ppm. Let's take a look: First generation - 0.6ppm. Second generation is 1.2ppm. 3rd generation is 1.8ppm. 4th is 2.4ppm, 5th = 3.0ppm etc. All within a few hundreds of a ppm of 0.6ppm per generation. The deviation from 0.6 is less than 0.05ppm at each generation. So, what does 0.05ppm mean? It's a delay of a single sample in 200 million samples. At 44.1kHz that's about 8 minutes worth of music, and yet DeltaWave determined this drift with only 30 seconds worth of samples, and the error appears to be 1/200,000,000. First, the spectrum: Obviously, there is a divergence above around 19KHz due to a filter. Let's see what that looks like if you compare the two spectrums: Wow, large difference after about 19kHz, multiple dBs! Maybe it's a good idea to low-pass filter above there? DW can do that. Also interesting the sinewave-like shape to the spectrum difference. That's an artifact produced by Dennis' ADC. Here it is zoomed in: Not huge in relative terms, only about 0.5dB swing, but still an interesting structure that I didn't know was there. Easy to see in DW! DW has a tool that can compensate for this, FFT EQ. Here's what the spectrum delta looks like if I engage EQ: All the waves are gone! Instant, and perfect EQ And of course, there is a lot more there in DW. I'll write better documentation for all of this once I finish fixing the bugs. For now, it's still a beta test. You want perfect or so near perfect time alignment it is a non-issue, and the same for timing drift, and the same for gain. All those are what Bill Waslo of Diffmaker and Liberty instruments called uninteresting differences. Meaning anything left was from some other factor. Deltawave isn't that perfect. It is better than Diffmaker by far, offers many more tools by far, and so many useful things. It still may not tell you, the null was ruined by distortion, or frequency response (though it has enough tools to determine this one) or some other factors. But it is a darned useful set of tools for these purposes. Most important to me is when it gives you a deep null you can count on it being for real. Maybe some relatively unimportant factor prevents a deep null and it isn't obvious why, but if the null is deep the match is really good. So at this point Paul's Deltawave is one heck of a piece of software. If all he does is iron out bugs he has managed that. So far he keeps adding useful features and conveniences to the core function of it at a very rapid clip. So many kudos to Paul for that. I uninstalled deltawave I cleaned the windows logs I reinstalled and unfortunately the problem remains The problem is eliminated only if drift correction is active if I make a new comparison and remove the drift again I get bit perfect I think the problem is what drift correction does when it's disabled Link to comment
