57gold
Any chance that drivers for FW will be amended to allow Integer Mode? Realize that they are supplied by a third party, but as I understand it: 1) Mytek and Weiss are licensees; 2) Damien has offered to provide the third party requirements/technical advice on Integer Mode capable drives as he has to others; and 3) vendors of stuff usually accommodate customer requests that broaden the appeal of their products, which in this case includes the driver supplier and Mytek, as well as other users of A+. AB79
Just want you guys to know what happened here yesterday. Tried to upgrade to latest beta firmware, but that did NOT go very well! After the firmwareloader finished, the display/dac just locked itself completely. After shutting down and then on again, the display was totally black! I didn't show anything at all. Then i tried to hook it up again with the mac mini with no sucess.( And yes i tried both usb connectors and firewire) The only thing that happens when turning ON the dac: - I hear a little 'click' ( that's the relay and that's just normal) - weak humming from trafo(also normal) -everything else seems very dead! I have contacted my reseller, and he will bring the "news" further to Adam. I'll just wait and see what happens.... Link to comment

Oh, well ... Michal Jurewicz, Mytek founder: "Hello Mytek Users, Over the past few days we had internal discussions here at Mytek and have consulted other authorities on Mac software implementation. There appears to be the need for Mytek to take a clear position on this. Here are two links specifically describing the issue: CHANNEL D - Support (see "Integer Mode" and Lion / Mountain Lion "Direct Mode") http://www.amr-audio.co.uk/large_image/MAC%20OSX%20audio%20players%20&%20Integer%20Mode.pdf Basically, what integer mode does, it bypasses two conversion stages, integer>float in the playback software and float>integer in the driver. The assumption, I underscore _assumption_, is that this could result in better sound quality because computer cpu is working less. In our internal discussions at Mytek we have come to conclusion, we will not try to provide integer support in the driver because Apple does not permit this anymore with 10.7 and 10.8 OSX as explained in channeld link. Our policy remains to fully support of the last two OS revisions. If Apple ever reverses their approach , we will look again. Having said this I want to also underscore that we found NO EVIDENCE in our daily DAC use that additional parallel events executed by CPU have any impact on sound quality (when using stereo192-dsd-dac). While such events could theoretically increase EMI emissions inside the computer which in turn could somehow affect the DAC performance by creeping to the DAC chip through ground planes etc., this potential interference was vey well addressed during the design of Mytek DAC. We meticulously executed USB/Digital/Clock/Analog Power and Ground isolation which moves this potential interference beyond measurable effects. Also, please note that one could treat DOP DSD interface as additional processing with similar effect- software player has to process each sample to add DOP markers and DAC has to strip them. Noone ever suggested this would compromise DSD sound, nor did we see any evidence to this effect. To summarize, integer support became a moot point because of no Apple support since OSX10.7. Hope this helps. The new USB drivers are not compatible with the older v1.7.1 firmware, perhaps you ought to highlight this to the users for potential repercussions at your support channel. The next topic is about the new beta firmware v1.7.5b1. The firmware somehow altered the intensity of the Mytek's front display. Even at the lowest setting of '1', it is still brighter than before. Another issue is that this change introduce very faint flickering of the display at setting '1' - it seems like the display is struggling to get enough power to operate smoothly. Furthermore, if the auto-off function is enabled, the display will react weirdly the moment before it switches off. i.e. display switches to highest light intensity before switching off. I can't help but notice as well that the internal sampling rate switching has also increased in transition time. For DSD material, it takes more switches between PCM-DSD to change from one rate to another. Perhaps this is deliberate to accommodate DSD128 for DoP? Link to comment

With new driver and firmware up sampling PCM 44.1 to128x DSD also now works in foobar 1.2.6 Hi, thank you for this comment. I've just confirmed this validity of the new USB2.0 drivers (Win7) working with Foobar 1.2.6 and I can enjoy my DSD128 files via Mytek. I'm not an avid user of Windows machines but for a while I might be forced to stay with this situation, because the current mytekusb module for Linux with these new drivers is not recognized as an ALSA driver for MPD (though the Mytek DAC itself appears to to recognized as a USB device). BTW, I can enjoy DSD128 files via the combination of Amanero Combo384 and Buffalo III DAC, if I want. Concerning Audirvana Plus, it is quite sorry for the Mytek DAC which can not afford the Integer mode, which Amanero can do like a piece of cake. Is this due to the difference between 9016 and 9018? Another issue is that this change introduce very faint flickering of the display at setting '1' - it seems like the display is struggling to get enough power to operate smoothly. Flickering for sure shouldn't be there. I passed this information to our programmers. It will be solved in next firmware release. Furthermore, if the auto-off function is enabled, the display will react weirdly the moment before it switches off. i.e. display switches to highest light intensity before switching off. Passed to programmer, indeed I can see it. I can't help but notice as well that the internal sampling rate switching has also increased in transition time.
