"Audiophile" SD Card Transport?

Turns out the Transcend 128GB card I have does NOT work properly with the Aune X5s (it does work just fine in my VW GTI). I does play for a while then stops and  an error code reading "Incompatible file structure" pops up on the screen. If tried doing a full reformat (now a quicky) and loaded different files with the same result.

The Sandisk Ultra 64GB (of the type pictured below) functions perfectly, so I've ordered a 128GB sample of the same type to give it a try. 

I've read a number of accounts about SD card players/readers often being rather "particular" regarding what cards they work well with and that appears to be true.

I am hoping the SanDisk work out since it costs less than half of the Transcend type that doesn't.

good clocks with re-clocking just before DAC (not ultra cost clocks but good and potato chip at end of I2s)

Minimum bit processing of digital audio files (stripped back control software, wav only single tread real time operation)

Storage medium with least data processing activity to deliver digital files (SD SLC card)

 

I am no electrical engineer and my conclusions are defined by a long journey of listening tests so YMMV.

I also spent a lot of money and time on USB out and while it has significantly improved with lots of add ons in recent years, after hearing SD playback done at less than one tenth the cost it became my go to for lights out  being there listening.

He did not claim there was less noise, just less power consumption.

 

The main advantage of SLC is durability and operating conditions (temperature). 

 

There have been studies done on power consumption and it really depends on how the data is read: less frequent reads of larger chunks do require less power but for frequent reads of small chunks standard drives may actually require less power.

Agree that magic can happen when we address every single aspect of a design AND that "Everything Matters." I think I laid out what this thread is about in my first post and hoped to clarify it in a couple of subsequent ones. It's an exploration of what may be possible with some existing "off the shelf" components heretofore not mentioned on this forum.

 

At this point I can say this: The little, inexpensive Aune X5s has something to offer. I am continuing to compare it to my 10X more expensive streaming setup and it stands right up to it offering a sound that's quite appealing and in some particular ways even better - Yep, I said the "B" word. It makes REALLY nice music, and I'm not at the end of it yet. 

 

Additionally, the Aune X5s is the first of what I expect to be 2 or 3 additional devices that given their technology may well be better than the Aune and certainly more versatile and convenient. One never knows until it's in the system though. My audio motto of "Simple sounds better - as long as it works" may come into play here, and the Aune sure has "simple" going for it.

That is why I asked the question: he actually speculated (or inferred if you prefer) that because there was less power consumption given a fixed level of I/O, that there is less noise.  Given the resources of high speed computing manufacturers it would be easy fro them to measure such noise.

Well what is clear is that nobody is discussing (nor are players revealing) what SD card transfer modes are being used.  I know that no players are using the cards in the SPI bus mode (no file system support in that but one could store and retrieve files with not much processing), but I hope that some are using the one-bit SD bus mode. Or maybe there could be some advantage to the "Two differential lines SD UHS-II mode."

Very happy to say that the QLS QA361 is in-house and has been in my Big Rig for 4-5 days now. The little gem itself is a simple machine as far as how it operates but seems I double my knowledge daily as far as how best to utilize and integrate it into my system. 

I promise to put it all into a separate thread as it well deserves.

FYI: the Ghent digital SP/DIG coax cable pictured will not work with the QA361.

Oh, and another Thank You for mentioning the Altman Tera Player! Just getting into some info on it. Much appreciated.

My focus is and will remain on using the QA361 not primarily as a portable player but on integrating it into a full sized, full fledged , room sized music system.
