The sound (or not) of the Tambaqui is truly special. Are you sending yours to you-know-who for measurement? Otherwise how will you know if it's better than a Topping? Because people are going to go off of his recommendations when buying a DAC. And there's a good chance that they won't like what they hear. Guys I wasn’t trying to start something. I was just ribbing Jason—because he is often the among the first to call for measurements and I believe he has several times sent Amir components to bench. (Though a lot of folks over at ASR do seem to espouse the opinion that if a $250 DAC measures the same as a $20K DAC then they will sound about the same. ) Albrecht and asdf1000 1 1 UpTone Audio LLC Link to comment

Mark, For a so-called “objectivist” you seem pretty challenged by the simple math of build cost, company overhead, profit margin, plus dealer margin. Build cost for that DAC is likely about $3K. Add some staff labor, 2x for modest margin, 35-40% dealer discount—and you are right there at $12K. If Mola Mola did not have a whole range of products each selling in reasonable numbers and sharing some chassis components then they would be losing money at that price. [How do I know this? For 10 years I co-ran a well-known and well-regarded pre-amp/amp firm—with 70 dealers/importers around the world—doing $1mil+/year and still lost money and had to fold (because the the overseas “distributors” ended up being 90% of the biz and the 50%+ discounts they received sucked all the profit from our high-build-cost products; we did not introduce new products fast enough to keep domestic dealers interested; it was also 2008, the height of the last economic contraction and USA brick-and-mortar dealers were dropping like flies.] barrows, PYP, The Computer Audiophile and 2 others 5 UpTone Audio LLC Link to comment

The results? Well, I'm trying to figure out how, eventually, I can afford this thing!! I've never heard such impeccable timing, ease and tonality. And in my LAN setup it doesn't require a fancy USB cable, doesn't require a hefty HQPlayer server (I have not tested it with HQP via USB yet, see below), nothing. It makes Roon sound like the best source money can buy. The lack of fatigue is palpable. Hi Ted: So glad to know you are enjoying the Tambaqui already. I hear it is a terrific DAC. Great to skip all the vagaries of S/PDIF, computer USB, etc. and just go straight in with Ethernet. All DAC inputs get converted to I2S/DSD for actual D/A conversion anyway. Would be fun for you to put an ear on our EtherREGEN. Ethernet-input-equipped DAC owners (dCS, Bricasti, Devialet, MolaMola, PS Audio, etc.) are the biggest fans of our active-differeential-isolation switch as it delivers its goodness straight into the DAC. Here are a couple of reports from a Tambaqui DAC owner with EtherREGEN: https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/55207-the-mola-mola-tambaqui-dac/?do=findComment&comment=1121985 https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/57519-uptone-audio-etherregen-listening-impressions/?do=findComment&comment=1009162 Drop me a line if you want to try one. Technically we just sold out--for the whole year due to global chip shortages--but I am sure I could rustle up a unit for you to try. --Alex C. UpTone Audio LLC Link to comment
