Brahms Symphonies, Scottish Chamber Orchestra

I ran into this set by accident, and decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did.

 

You might think that Brahms is a poor match for a chamber orchestra. I, at least, am used to massive Brahms, moving implacably to a conclusion, sort of like a battleship. This version is more akin to a schooner, much more agile but still, when needed, powerful. The players are good and they play with enthusiasm and definite purpose. The conductor seems to get the best from them. These are almost celebratory, at least to my hearing. The recording quality is very good, with little coloration and great dynamic range.

This is cool for many readers who are looking for more classical music. Classical has to be the most misunderstood genre and usually overwhelms those looking to get into it.
