Summary of useful findings and recommendations

This section will be a living repository of useful info from this thread. It's very similar to a wiki and will be maintained by a small group of thread moderators.

Before you get started please refer to the Audio-Linux website to ensure you have the latest info and the proper versions of the OS. Audio-Linux.com

**** Updated for AL 1.30 menu 118 or later.

  "First Run" setup for headless.

Setup your NUC with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the NUC BIOS settings.  From the menu note the IP address of the machine to SSH into.  From a MAC the macOS terminal program supports SSH:

Then it is simpler to cut and paste into the terminal session. After entering the password for the audiolinuxuser you will be presented with the AL headless menu:

Option 8 takes you to the command line for the following basic setup.  You will need to be the Root user for this setup and the su command first:

su

Fix the time zone:  (this is my timezone - look in directory /usr/share/zoneinfo)

timedatectl set-timezone America/Chicago

Setup and Start NTP daemon (to keep the system time in sync)

*** the config file is now properly filled in.

Now Start the daemon

timedatectl set-ntp true

NOTE: Sometimes the system takes a little while to get synced up.

Set hostname  (this provides a unique name for the machine on your network.  Replace <NAME> with your chosen name)

hostnamectl set-hostname <NAME>

Once the above items are set up your machine is ready to be configured for say a Roon bridge/endpoint. That is done using the AL menu.  To return to the menu do the following commands.

exit

menu

----------------------------------

For most of us, the following basic settings are key.

From the configuration menu:

6. START and enable Roonbridge

15. SET Realtime Priority to extreme

16. ENABLE ramroot (reboot after)

Return to the main menu and reboot the NUC using

11 Reboot

------------------

Roon Server setup is a bit more complex and we will cover it completely a bit later.  The key is where you are booting from and where the Roon database is stored.  In general; say a 32gb OPTANE "SSD".

  • You have to partition the SSD into a boot drive and a storage drive.
  • The transfer the USB stick install to the boot partition.
  • Reboot from the boot partition.
  • Do the basic setup. Timezone and name
  • Transfer the Roon Database to the storage drive
  • Start the Roon Server
  • .....

-----------------

The machine will reboot and from the display attached to the NUC you can watch it boot up and load into RAM.  Once the AudioLinux menu is showing the endpoint should be available in Roon.    This completes the basic startup sequence.  The system is ready to start testing.

Isn't the DNBE a bare bones card without a case?

In high power mode this machine makes a great server, and in low power mode makes a great endpoint that can with some effort be powered by an lps1.2.

Anyway the best NUC sound quality I have heard comes from this machine, but it is expensive and the most difficult to configure.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge here.

As an endpoint, do you use the DNBE with 4GB RAM?

Is more/maximum RAM preferable for DNBE as a server?

Please excuse me if this is a silly question but with only a single LAN port on a NUC, how do you connect the server NUC to the router and the NUC endpoint?

Regards,

Geoff

@BigAlMc

Thanks Alan.

I must confess to be a real "nube" when it comes to computing/networking.

So with the switch connected to the Modem with a LAN cable, the Endpoint NUC and Sever NUC both connected to the server via a LAN cable; the switch can pass information from an iPad to the Serve NUC for playback control and yet music information from Server NUC to Endpoint NUC without any special settings?

You see, I have been using a Macmini as a server with a Thunderbolt to LAN converter as my second LAN port to connect to an sMS-200.

I just got my NUC7PYJH and plan to overhaul my system due to these exciting findings by getting a NUC7i7DNBE for server duties.

On another note, with AL on a NUC endpoint and a NUC server can one use the embedded Squeezelite/Logitech MS to play music or is Roon required?

I might be confusing things but it seems some here are saying Squeezelite sounds better but the advantage of Roon is the user interface and library management .

Geoff

Geoff, 4gb works just fine with ram booted AL and Roonbridge. It also sounds better to my ears than two 4gb boards.

Thanks Larry.

Is that 4GB for server duties as well on the NUC7i7DNBE?

Hi All,

AFAIK, NUCs have one ethernet port.

If "bridging" a NUC endpoint to a server with a USB-Ethernet adapter; does one have to configure the NUC/AL specifically or is the connection automatic?

I have my NUC7PJYH running SqueezeLite and LMS on the same NUC running Al Headless.

After much frustration I have managed to run it in Extreme2 and Ramboot mode as suggested.

I understand in Ramboot mode one can remove the USB boot drive for further improvement.

I tried this but LMS freezes and I lose my connection and ability to play via Squeezelite.

I would appreciate some advice please.

Thanks for responding Monge.

Yes; I have done all of the above.

When I pull out the USB AL boot drive LMS hangs.

I check the running services and LMS and Squeezlite show to be still running.

Ramroot status and RAM mode enabled with Status check.

I have to disable all running services and re-emable them for it to start working again after reinserting the USB boot drive.

I have 4GB of RAM on the NUC running headless.

Hi All,

I am running LMS and Squeezelite via AL headless on a NUC7PJYH with 4GB RAM

It plays DoP fine for DSD64 and DSD128 but can't play DSD256 even though my Chord DAVE/BluMkII is 768kHz capable.

For those using Squeezelite as an endpoint for ROON; is playing DSD256 possible via DoP?

It was working without any problems on my previous setup with Macmini/Audirvana.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Geoff

Hi,

I am also running NUC7PJYH AL headless with external LMS  server but with 8GB ram using squezelite (not R2 version). My DAC supports DOP for DSD64 (tested on the same NUC using daphile working fine ) but I could not get DSD to work in DOP mode for AL. Can you share what is the setting for your squeezelite config file in linux ?  Thanks

squeezelite conf

"-D -r 44100-768000 -b 800000:200000  -e alac -o front: CARD=Blu2, DEV=0"

With the patience and help from Piero; I managed to get Squeezelite to play DSD256 via DoP on my DAC.

He also helped me fix the instability of Squeezlite playing Apple Lossless files.

Regards,

Geoff
