These folks have obviously never heard a first class stereo system. I have owned several systems where instruments and voice could be located precisely in three dimensions. Ambisonics will do this quite well, but is a multi channel system. Many years ago I was at Dr. John Coolidges (a reviewer for the Absolute Sound). He had Avalon Ascents and we were listening to Die Miestersinger. The 3d effect was uncanny. I have made many recordings with the Schoeps stereosphere microphone (a semi-binaural technique) Again, playback on a world class system provides a wonderful 3d effect. There is nothing new under the sun, unless you count making it possible with cheap laptop speakers.
