New HDPLEX 200W LPS

Recommended Posts

Wow! I haven't been to this thread for ages and missed the issues with some of the original supply. After reading through the thread I have checked my unit from the original batch and can confirm that:

  1. It has Elna capacitors
  2. The earth wire is connected as it should be

Should I be worried about the rectifier issue, is it an inherent problem that needs fixing?

My unit doesn't have much of a load, I am only using the 12V outlet and one of the adjustable outlets for a total of maybe 60 to 70 watts. I never use the 19V and occasionally use the 2nd adjustable outlet. So far it has performed without issue using Ghent DC cables and is on 24/7 but I would have been p***** if I had discovered that I didn't get the specified parts.

Some people in here think that Amir doesn't know what to use his toys for (I am among them). These are not the people who don't hear a difference in anything whatsoever (like Amir himself and unlike me).

As long as every difference is rejected with a "but you won't hear that anyway", then stop posting this BS. Or give it to archimago etc.

Or flush the toilet harder, if you know what I mean ...

He knows how to measure. And when he has had a mistake he has rectified.

It is also true that not everything in audio is measurable or measured. But these graphs are devastating.

People don't realize there is a limitation on measuring devices that is often far inferior to human ear which is a far superior measuring instruments so to speak.  This explains why one an hear the sonic difference between Steinway and Bosendorfer and Yamaha but but I bet one cannot really measure it electronically to tell the difference. Ok, we are talking about measuring noise now but surely the human ear can hear subtle changes as a result of electronic noise. So it is possible the noise difference between different PSU are so low that measuring instruments are not really detecting it but they are large enough to affect the sound.

Well, with my second audio system I ENJOY very much with very good recordings with high/very high DR. Vast majory, vinyls. Can you say the same?

I respect the guy, he was the one responsible for introducing room correction into windows vista, and it's bass mgt & home theater features. He knows what he's doing. Those threads were on avsforum where we even discussed how to hack the registry so that certain cards could run these features.

HD plex are not true linear power supplies, and they use a shared transformer for several rails which is not the most ideal design choice. Furtthermore, wasn't there a DC - DC converter inside the latest PSU? So I'm not surprised what he measured.

Yes. And if you really followed those (especially the one about Audio Processing in Vista explained) then you know we don't like each other.

Agree that HDplex is not the ideal LPS, and really is for budget user for a cheap solution. It is supposed to work well with this converter that is placed within the HDPLEX PC:

That is for powering an ATX (PSU) based computer, which is all with a normal power inlet (not 19V etc.). So remove the PSU and put that instead, together with (e.g.) the HDPlex 200W. But then it is a ~ 200W PSU only (and not 400W).

The DC-ATX is powered by the 19V rail of a supply like the 200W LPS and in turn powers the 24-pin and 8-pin EPS12V connectors on a motherboard.  It's an alternative to using a linear ATX supply.

Rick - Although semantically and technically true, this could be confusing. I would rather say : it is an alternative to using a switching ATX supply.

i have built my own power supply with a simple ( but BIG !) CLC supply  for the 19V feeding the DC-ATX  , i'm not sure if it mesure better than the stock switching one but it sounds way better.. 🙂
