JBL vintage vs modern speakers

Recommended Posts

I recently heard a pair of vintage JBL speakers.  I have read and seen youtube videos on them, but this is only 2nd time I have heard a pair of vintage JBL speakers....they were low end and still sounded fantastic.  I am contemplating picking up a pair to compare to other modern speakers....

Anyone else have any experience in this area?

I have a piar of late 90’s Danish built JBL’ L100’s, so not exactly vintage, but getting there.

Mine are identical to those shown in the link.  I love the things, they are quite lush and full bodied, they are just plain good to listen too.  Versus more modern equivalents I would say that they sound splendidly magnificent in a rich and bold kind of way, but stuff like bass accuracy is dreadful by comparison.   In a way, they sound splendid due to their deficiencies.

I do have KEF Blades for comparison, the Blades are a smidgen better, but I love the JBL’s so much I suspect I will never sell them.  Currently they are earning their keep performing rear surround duties.  12” bass drivers are great for trashy action movies.?

Being serious, they are probably worth next to nothing, and if you like big and bold they would be a budget money bargain.  Highly recommend!

Windows 11 PC, Roon, HQPlayer, Focus Fidelity convolutions, iFi Zen Stream, Paul Hynes SR4, Mutec REF10, Mutec MC3+USB, Devialet 1000Pro, KEF Blade.  Plus Pro-Ject Signature 12 TT for playing my 'legacy' vinyl collection. Desktop system; RME ADI-2 DAC fs, Meze Empyrean headphones.

Which model are you talking about?
The "white woofer" models still sound relevant.
Kenrick Sound tunes things very brightly (so I have been told.  ...and what you can glean from the videos through the camera mics and compression of Youtube tend to add credibility to this observation)in their modifications.

I have a mint set of those white woofers if you would ever care to engage in a little DIY.

L112, yea white woofer (128H)...

Picked up the pair...but still haven't opened the box...will probably get to them within the next couple days.

glad you made it back (wink)

what vintage are they?  I don't have any direct comparisons for you, but would suggest you think about cost to redo the surrounds as compared with the changes in speaker technology from whenever until now...

70s....they said the surrounds were redone about a year ago.

Great speaker for playing rock from the 70's... Eagles in particular. But too colored for classical
