ioSafe "disaster-proof" external drive?

Currently I have a Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 TB hard drive for my music/movies/video library.

 

It is not one that gets good reviews.

 

I am thinking of replacing it with this:

Anyone have any experiences with this?

 

Any problems with having the library directly on it (vs backed up to it)?

 

My mini doesn't have enough space on the main drive.

I reviewed a similar device quite a while ago. Make sure you read the specs closely. Some of these devices don't protect against much.

Why not just get an inexpensive drive (or make your current drive into a backup) and move the backup elsewhere (friend, bank vault, etc). It seems unlikely that flooding or fires or wind would kill 2 drives in different locations

That is in fact what I do now.

 

I put everything on a portable 1 TB hard drive and put it in a fire safe. But this requires manual intervention, and is thus fallible.

Agreed.

 

Human error or sloppiness is my biggest cause of data loss.
