advice on good programs for converting cassette tapes to digital audio

Hello Everyone,

I recently went to my family's storage locer and found a cache of old tapes. Some are from course lectures that I would really love to turn into a digital format, and some are music recordings. I have the silver keyed, unibody macbook pro and I have the newer macbook pro as well. what would be the best way to convert the audio cassettes to digital format? Please include program names and specific hardware that would be needed.
