Connecting raspberry pi to network

the Ethernet port is the weakest part of the pi design and there's always potential for electrical interaction between components with wired connections. Using the built in WiFi is cheaper for electrical isolation than buying optical Ethernet kit and it eliminates being "tethered". However while the 3B+ supports 5G wifi, I couldn't get it to pass data vs a just fine 2.4G connection to the same WiFi router 20" away across open space. Hence the caution about DSD, which may be outside the compute speed of a Pi anyway.

Any recommendation on wifi dongle usable (Pi3B, Volumio)?
