Browniesbane Posted April 25, 2018 Share Posted April 25, 2018 Is there a general view about the best way to link raspberry pi (latest version) to a network, wireless or Ethernet or something else. I have a rpi3b+ With an allo one board. Because a direct Ethernet connect is awkward , my choice is wireless, or using a spare AirPort Extreme in client mode to grab the wireless signal and transmit to rpi via Ethernet, much like is often done with a microrendu that cant be directly connected by Ethernet to the home network. im thinking avoiding rpi wireless is good but is it worth adding another device to the chain by inserting the airport express. davide256 Posted April 25, 2018 Share Posted April 25, 2018 Avoid the Ethernet port and use the built in 2.4 wifi. Will work well as long as you aren't streaming DSD and have no interference in wifi signal path. Do run the Pi off a good power supply to get the best out of it and the Digione. Thx. the Ethernet port is the weakest part of the pi design and there's always potential for electrical interaction between components with wired connections. Using the built in WiFi is cheaper for electrical isolation than buying optical Ethernet kit and it eliminates being "tethered". However while the 3B+ supports 5G wifi, I couldn't get it to pass data vs a just fine 2.4G connection to the same WiFi router 20" away across open space. Mike Pinkerton Posted April 29, 2018 Share Posted April 29, 2018 On the Pi, the ethernet and USB share the same bus, which reduces available data bandwidth. The Pi can handle DSD64 just fine over Ethernet, but I had issues going up to DSD128. Link to comment

I am using a 2.4gG Edimax on USBridge, built in 2.4G works fine on PI 3b+. Beware of 5G dongles that have a USB 2.0 connector, 2.0 speed throttles the 5G speed, need USB 3.
