I'll let Alex answer the direct question, but as someone that has generated the magic "Oh Shit!" white smoke one too many times, I've developed the discipline of checking the voltage of variable supplies with a multi-meter before plugging them into a new device.  There is definite risk to moving quickly when switching supply voltages and devices quickly!
