micro iCAN SE - recommended volume knob position

Hi iFi @AMR/iFi audio

Just picked up the awesome iCAN SE.

What volume knob position is best? I saw a mention of 12 to 2 o'clock somewhere but what's the issue with going past 2 o'clock with the knob ? Assuming this actual volume isn't causing damage to my hearing of course

Is there distortion past 2 o'clock?

Cheers

The 9 to 12 range should be the place to be for normal level listening. If one doesn't fit in there with a given headphones, it's time to adjust gain. That's all.

Your FAQ says:

"We recommend to set the gain as low as possible but as high as needed to get comfortable listening levels with the volume control at around 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock."

Can you kindly ask the Tech team my question about what is wrong beyond 2 o'clock? Is there distortion beyond 2 o'clock?

Ah, 12 to 2 indeed, that's the correct space. Beyond this you'll get louder sound. And here it's up to you if you'd like to go there. Distortions etc. aren't a factor here, it's about you being aware how much SPL is too much for you, that's all.

Noted, my OP stated 'Assuming this actual volume isn't causing damage to my hearing of course'

Thanks for confirming distortion isn't a factor beyond 2 o'clock.

At some point distortions are present, but to have this audible, you'd either had to match headphones/IEMs wrongly, i.e. set too high gain and push vol. knob way above reasonable level.

Thanks. Why is this specific range recommended though?

I guess there must be a technical reason why 12 to 2 o'clock is the recommendation by iFi Engineering, and not say, 'anything past 9 o'clock is fine'?

I guess this is what I'm trying to ask.

With analogue volume potentiometers one can hear channel imbalance early on. That's why it's advised to set the gain on a level past 9 o'clock as on this level this issue doesn't occur.

There's one more thing:

The Sound & Vision Bristol Show 2018 is in the past now. Things happened there, oh yes they did!

Yup, that's our full Pro rig on the Pro iRack.

Some people were impressed more than just 'mildly'....

And we had someone (aka The Cap'n) in there to answer the most technical questions there are.

Thanks Gents!

But we're back to the 9o'clock number but the website FAQ says 12o'clock to 2o'clock range recommended.

The inconsistency causes confusion (I mean this respectfully).

So is channel imbalance still potentially an issue under 12o'clock or is it a non-issue past 9o'clock? For the iCAN SE.

The Pro iRack looks fantastic. Looking forward to hopefully demo-ing in store soon.

Cheers

Hi Em2016

Analogue volume controls have some channel imbalance up to 9 o clock. We suggest to use 12 to 3 o clock. Open up the volume control and enjoy the maximum dynamics.

Best wishes
