buonassi
I'm wondering how many others are in the same boat I am? I can't find any area on CA to read about meetups, or other ways to share this passion for hifi in person! Is there such an area? should there be? Is this something that warrants its own forum section? I guess I can understand that meetups aren't as easy with gear that's not easily transportable (like headphone gear is). And most people aren't comfortable hosting a listening session for strangers at their residence. Still, It would be nice to know there are others geographically nearby I could befriend and maybe even meet up with publicly. Any guidance on this would be helpful. How do enthusiasts meet up, outside of the big hifi shows and expos? Either these clubs don't exist or they are very exclusive and not published. Either that or my googling techniques aren't up to snuff. Link to comment
beerandmusic
Many major cities have meetup groups...i know LA,orange, and SanDiego have groups. Many people go to the audio shows too. Link to comment
Popular Post mansr
I've also occasionally wondered if there are any others in my area. Could be fun to meet for a drink, if nothing else. I don't go to audio shows since I don't see the point in paying money for the privilege of being subjected to an endless sales pitch. I don't recall ever getting a sales pitch that i did not initiate at an audio show and i have been to a dozen of them. The cost is less than the trip costs, and if you never have been to any, you owe it to yourself to go to one....make it part of a vacation...there are usually many things to do or see besides the show in the area....jmo...not preaching or trying to convince...just my angle. The entire purpose of audio shows is to sell stuff. Same as any trade show. Link to comment

Thats very true, but most sales people are too busy to try to push anything on someone unless they are genuinely interested....think of a store with one sales person and 200 people looking at their gear...they aren't going to have time to spend talking to 200 people...they know to only pitch to those with questions. about the closest you will get to a pitch is a demo that is demo'd to many and you can simply walk out during demo if uninterested. They also have free food and drinks...(smile) Teresa 1 Link to comment

rando
You are betraying the difference between US and UK. Ever heard the term "knockers" used in relation to salesmen? In the US showing up to hear millions of dollars worth of stereo systems and soak up free booze without being fiscally frisked may be possible. Link to comment

There’s so much good high end sound that comes out of the UK, but there’s also so many extremely touchy class-envy based vintage dumpster hunters — not calling you one, just something I’ve noticed. botrytis
I live in SE MI and we have a fairly large group here. We are called SMAC - Southeast Michigan Audio Club. We have monthly get togethers. You can join, especially if your name is Dave (it seems we have a large mount of members named Dave) but others are welcome. We have people from Port Huron and Canada, to Lansing, MI that come for the meets. http://www.michiganaudioclub.com/ buonassi 1 Current: Daphile on an AMD A10-9500 with 16 GB RAM DAC - TEAC UD-501 DAC Pre-amp - Rotel RC-1590 Amplification - Benchmark AHB2 amplifier Speakers - Revel M126Be with 2 REL 7/ti subwoofers Cables - Tara Labs RSC Reference and Blue Jean Cable Balanced Interconnects Link to comment

I'm in central Illinois so I may have to plan a weekend trip. I'll let you know personally if I can plan something like that this year. I'd think there have to be similar groups in Chicago or St. Louis. All I've been able to find are mostly geared toward car audio. Link to comment

ted_b
A number of us CAers usually meet at the bar at Axpona annually (and RMAF too). I may not make Axpona this year, but if I do I'm sure we'll meet for drinks. Chris may want to schedule it. I know my new home (Denver) will be a nice place for audio, as the Colorado Audio Society is the foundation for RMAF, among other things. buonassi 1 "We're all bozos on this bus"....F.T.
