Benji
Can anyone help me understand what these are and if there is even a point in owning one. Much Appreciated. I've been thinking about getting a basic 2 channel receiver and I'm considering a Cambridge Audio Topaz SR20. The other idea would be to get either the Onkyo TX-8260 or TX-8270 but I don't know if there is a point as either one will be connected to a HTPC via Toslink Optical. What does that Ethernet port enable you to do? Are there any subscription free radio channels only accessable if you have a "network" receiver or is just having a HTPC connected good enough? zackthedog
I'm open to correction, but I think the ethernet connection allows you to send music files directly from your storage to your receiver via DLNA, thus avoiding any playback engine in the PC. It also allows for the use of a simple remote control on a pad or phone. The ethernet connection also offers better isolation the rest of your system. The ability to access internet radio and streaming services from some DLNA controllers is a bonus. Link to comment

A couple screenshots from the Onkyo Controller app showing you the networking capabilities. I have the Onkyo TX-RZ710 in my AV system, but I’d imagine the Onkyo receivers you mention would have similar capabilities. Of all its networking capabilities, I’ve only used Tidal.
