Could somebody splain the Airport Extreme to me puhleeeze?

I don't get it. A lot of people here seem to use the Airport Extreme and connect their storage to that. Does that setup offer something extra compared to connecting storage say via ethernet to the network router?

 

So many people are using the Airport, am I missing something here?

Many people have AEs as wireless routers already and have separate USB drives already so they take advantage of the USB port on the device.
