tboooe
I have a Gigabyte z270 MX Gaming mobo that supports Optane. However, my CPU, a i7-6700 does not so I will need to upgrade to at least an i7-7700. Anyway, if I use the Optane as a drive cache, can I then just remove the SSD from the PC? Or is it best to use Optane as another drive and clone my OS SSD on to it? 12TB NAS >> i7-6700 Server/Control PC >> i3-5015u NAA >> Singxer SU-1 DDC (modded) >> Holo Spring L3 DAC >> Accustic Arts Power 1 int amp >> Sonus Faber Guaneri Evolution speakers + REL T/5i sub (x2) Other components: UpTone Audio LPS1.2/IsoRegen, Fiber Switch and FMC, Windows Server 2016 OS, Audiophile Optimizer 3.0, Fidelizer Pro 6, HQ Player, Roonserver, PS Audio P3 AC regenerator, HDPlex 400W ATX & 200W Linear PSU, Light Harmonic Lightspeed Split USB cable, Synergistic Research Tungsten AC power cords, Tara Labs The One speaker cables, Tara Labs The Two Extended with HFX Station IC, Oyaide R1 outlets, Stillpoints Ultra Mini footers, Hi-Fi Tuning fuses, Vicoustic/RealTraps/GIK room treatments Link to comment

You can slip the drivers into the Windows installer as they're not currently included. You can also add them when you select the OS drive. Make sure UEFI and Optane are enabled in the BIOS. I know you're probably looking for a 7700K as I think you upsample to DSD512, but if you wanted a 7700T I have one to sell. Thank you...not sure what you mean about "slip the drivers into the Windows installer.."? Are you referring to when I clone my current SSD? When I clone the drive wont everything get copied including software I installed such as HQP, Roon, etc? Thank for letting me know about the 7700T you have. I just checked and the 7700T is about the same performance 6700 I have. I cant get the i7-7700K because I run a fanless case. You can add the Optane driver during Windows install and it will recognize Optane as a hd to install the OS onto. The motherboard/chipset and compatible proc just need to support it. By slip I mean slipstream. You would slipstream the Optane driver into the Windows package. Intel provides a detailed step by step instruction on how to do this at their Optane site. Thank you. tboooe
Finally got my 800p 58gb Optane stick installed and working. Instead of cloning my current Samsung Pro SSD, I decided to just do a clean install of Server 2016 in core mode, HQP, and Roonserver. Even though the only thing that changed in my PC was the Optane stick, I am having some strange networking issues. First, when i try to set a fixed IP address, I get very inconsistent performance. Remote desktop frequently wont connect and my Roon remote wont connect with Roonserver. Second, HQP on this PC doesnt find the NAA consistently. My impressions: I definitely notice browsing through Roon is snappier. Album art and artist images load up more quickly as my browse Roon. In terms of sound, my initial impression after only a few hours of listening is of a blacker background, a level of quiet that allows me to hear more details of the music. The difference is not night and day but noticeable. At the moment, the Optane stick is installed in the M.2 slot. I am going to get the Asus card and install it the PCEIx16 slot to compare the connection through the chipset vs the cpu directly. lmitche 1 12TB NAS >> i7-6700 Server/Control PC >> i3-5015u NAA >> Singxer SU-1 DDC (modded) >> Holo Spring L3 DAC >> Accustic Arts Power 1 int amp >> Sonus Faber Guaneri Evolution speakers + REL T/5i sub (x2) Other components: UpTone Audio LPS1.2/IsoRegen, Fiber Switch and FMC, Windows Server 2016 OS, Audiophile Optimizer 3.0, Fidelizer Pro 6, HQ Player, Roonserver, PS Audio P3 AC regenerator, HDPlex 400W ATX & 200W Linear PSU, Light Harmonic Lightspeed Split USB cable, Synergistic Research Tungsten AC power cords, Tara Labs The One speaker cables, Tara Labs The Two Extended with HFX Station IC, Oyaide R1 outlets, Stillpoints Ultra Mini footers, Hi-Fi Tuning fuses, Vicoustic/RealTraps/GIK room treatments Link to comment
Popular Post tboooe
After having the Optane drive in my system now for a few days I think i have zeroed in on the affect it has on my system. First and foremost, my initial impression of the lack of background noise remains though it goes beyond this. The one adjective I keep going back to in my mind is pristine. The notes, the music, the voice sound like there is absolutely nothing adulterating them. The clarity and purity of the sound is at a level my system has never had before. The second change I noticed was in soundstage depth and layering. One complaint I've had of my system is how flat the soundstage. The music sounds like it coming from one plane. I was resigned to this shortcoming, believing it was caused by my small listening room. With the Optane drive, I notice more layering of the music, front to back. This impression is helped by the fact that voices are a bit more forward so the layering is more pronounced. The overall impact is that there is now a dimensionality that adds to the realism and overall engagement I feel with the music. Its really hard to believe that changing the OS drive from SSD to Optane would have this impact on my system. For around $125 I would say this upgrade is definitely worth it. tboooe
Hey guys...just an FYI...my mobo today all of sudden decided to go into an endless bootloop. I figured out there is some issue with the lastest version of the bios supporting Optane causing it not work with XMP profiles. After some searching it seems this is a well known issue with my mobo, a Gigabyte Z270MX Gaming 5. The solution is to not use XMP. Not sure if running my RAM at the lower speed instead of 3000Mhz impacts the sound in anyway. I need to test. Anyway, here is a post I did on this issue with the link describing the issue in more detail. BTW, the issue was reported back in 2017 and Gigabyte still has yet to come up with a solution. 12TB NAS >> i7-6700 Server/Control PC >> i3-5015u NAA >> Singxer SU-1 DDC (modded) >> Holo Spring L3 DAC >> Accustic Arts Power 1 int amp >> Sonus Faber Guaneri Evolution speakers + REL T/5i sub (x2) Other components: UpTone Audio LPS1.2/IsoRegen, Fiber Switch and FMC, Windows Server 2016 OS, Audiophile Optimizer 3.0, Fidelizer Pro 6, HQ Player, Roonserver, PS Audio P3 AC regenerator, HDPlex 400W ATX & 200W Linear PSU, Light Harmonic Lightspeed Split USB cable, Synergistic Research Tungsten AC power cords, Tara Labs The One speaker cables, Tara Labs The Two Extended with HFX Station IC, Oyaide R1 outlets, Stillpoints Ultra Mini footers, Hi-Fi Tuning fuses, Vicoustic/RealTraps/GIK room treatments Link to comment

BTW, whats really weird is that my mobo worked fine for the past week since I installed the Optane. I've rebooted numerous times without a problem. Then today, while playing music it just shut down and rebooted endlessly. Why would it happen now instead of right away when I first installed the Optane? 12TB NAS >> i7-6700 Server/Control PC >> i3-5015u NAA >> Singxer SU-1 DDC (modded) >> Holo Spring L3 DAC >> Accustic Arts Power 1 int amp >> Sonus Faber Guaneri Evolution speakers + REL T/5i sub (x2) Other components: UpTone Audio LPS1.2/IsoRegen, Fiber Switch and FMC, Windows Server 2016 OS, Audiophile Optimizer 3.0, Fidelizer Pro 6, HQ Player, Roonserver, PS Audio P3 AC regenerator, HDPlex 400W ATX & 200W Linear PSU, Light Harmonic Lightspeed Split USB cable, Synergistic Research Tungsten AC power cords, Tara Labs The One speaker cables, Tara Labs The Two Extended with HFX Station IC, Oyaide R1 outlets, Stillpoints Ultra Mini footers, Hi-Fi Tuning fuses, Vicoustic/RealTraps/GIK room treatments Link to comment
tboooe
Check this out guys...NVME over fiber optic. Could this improve sound even more by reducing noise? https://www.itprotoday.com/object-storage/introduction-nvme-over-fabric 12TB NAS >> i7-6700 Server/Control PC >> i3-5015u NAA >> Singxer SU-1 DDC (modded) >> Holo Spring L3 DAC >> Accustic Arts Power 1 int amp >> Sonus Faber Guaneri Evolution speakers + REL T/5i sub (x2) Other components: UpTone Audio LPS1.2/IsoRegen, Fiber Switch and FMC, Windows Server 2016 OS, Audiophile Optimizer 3.0, Fidelizer Pro 6, HQ Player, Roonserver, PS Audio P3 AC regenerator, HDPlex 400W ATX & 200W Linear PSU, Light Harmonic Lightspeed Split USB cable, Synergistic Research Tungsten AC power cords, Tara Labs The One speaker cables, Tara Labs The Two Extended with HFX Station IC, Oyaide R1 outlets, Stillpoints Ultra Mini footers, Hi-Fi Tuning fuses, Vicoustic/RealTraps/GIK room treatments Link to comment
