That's some amazing diy speakers with top grade drivers! I bet it sounds alive!! ?

Built a listening room in the basement, with DIY speakers:

Custom acoustic panels

Equipment:

Source - converted tower PC in a Silverstone HTPC case, nearly silent operation, will get closer with my new PSU set to arrive on Friday (Seasonic 400W), using JRiver WASAPI out from onboard Toslink. Will be adding a SOtM USB card when funds allow

Out to Schiit Gungnir USB Gen 2 - I have compared USB in my current state vs Toslink and Toslink is the clear winner

Balanced out to Bel Canto Pre1 preamp

SE RCA out to B&K AV5000 amp

Interconnects are custom

Speaker cables are custom, StarQuad with Nakamichi connections on both ends

Subs are BIC America F12s

Stunning, realistic, 3D sound, that's about all I can say. Highly resolving, very musical. All equipment is on platforms using Barry Diament's acoustic suspension design - bicycle inner tubes partially inflated under wood platforms with ball bearings supporting the actual equipment.

I'm a happy dude.

Thanks for looking,

Todd

very interesting looking speaker....that keyboard is wild too...wtf?

The speakers are Audience 1+1's. Audience ClairAudient 1+1 Personal Reference Monitor | The Absolute Sound Full range. No crossovers to add phase distortions, etc. They have a very clear soundstage and imaging. I choose to use a little bass EQ as to avoid needing a subwoofer. I use a BBE Sonic Maximizer 282r that provides a linear bass boost. I do not use any high frequency enhancement. Its not needed with great speakers. It provides a dynamic EQ which makes the bass very much alive sounding.

The keyboard? Adesso® EasyTouch 132 - Luminous 4X Large Print Multimedia Desktop Keyboard-Adesso® EasyTouch 132 - Luminous 4X Large Print Multimedia Desktop Keyboard It was designed to help the visually impaired. I chose it because I like to listen to my music and videos with the lights off. Its a keyboard with large letters. The color that allows you to see the letters when the only light to see the keyboard with is from your monitor. I find with the lights down it makes for a more relaxing listening time late at night. I needed to see the keyboard. So? Nothing fancy, nor very expensive. Just simply and gets the job done with little light to see it with.

Used a removable PC cam... I am no professional photographer.. And, have mercy. This was my first photo attempt.

How do you like the Isoacoustics speaker stands? I was interested to see them. I just bought the recent Aperta model for under my B&W 805S' which sit on a wooden unit which also supports the plasma TV and the rest of my gear in the shelves below. I like what the stands did for me a lot against up turned spikes.

Very interesting speakers. How far from them do you listen? My seated position is about 8ft. from the speakers. What is the imaging of the Audience like at that distance?

The speaker stands are really interesting. Very secure and decouples from the desk surface. I bought them for my standard monitors I had been using. The Audience 1+1's are bipolar. So, the Isoacoustic stands are not really needed for their function any more. When you have bipolar speakers they are like a gyroscope in how each side cancels out the vibration from the opposite side. I just use them because I have them, and I like the way they look with the set up I am now using.

I am strictly nearfield. 8 feet I could not tell you. I do know that using a subwoofer is needed when listening at a distance. Audience also has a larger model. As far as imaging? Its hard to get better. No crossover and only one source driver facing you. Its the main reason I got them. Its hard to explain the difference. It just sounds no better than your source equipment. Certain distortions are gone in phase shift and crossover anomalies which we all take for granted with conventional designs. These speakers can be your enemy or your best friend. They just let through what it being put through. I use some linear bass boost for my nearfield, and I am all set.

My dad suffers from macular degeneration and has the same keyboard. Still can't really see it. Insists on driving though.

Vinyl is a hugely overpriced way to get flawed sound. Digital is an inexpensive way to get less flawed (though flawed nonetheless) sound.

I use the keyboard because I sit with the lights off at night. The only light is what comes off my monitor. Its perfect for that reason. Sorry to hear about your dad.

One of the most difficult things for a son or daughter is to tell your aging parent they are unfit to drive an automobile. But please tell them. If they don't comply contact the DMV.

No, I don't think I'll be ratting my father out to the dmv any time soon. If that's how he wants to off himself, so be it. He still drives way better than many people I see on the road who are way younger than me, not because they can't see (presumably) but because they don't pay attention or they are just stupid. I just won't ride with him. I meet him at his doctor's office on my motorcycle.

What you see here is all I listen to. Pretty pedestrian, but I love the sound.Portable rigs.jpg Where I am right now has a lot of noise, so I rarely use speakers. I think most of this gear is listed in my profile, or reply if you have questions.

How do you like the iFi audio? I have been wondering about the micro – iTube to be used between my DAC and preamp for its benefits and effect.

This stack is the Micro iDSD and Micro iCAN. They are both great and great value, especially the iDSD, but I have no experience with the iTube. As you can see, I already have 2 tube preamp stages in the Peachtree integrated and Schiit Valhalla 2 hp amp/pre. Based on my experience w/ the company though, I don't know that you can go wrong w/ ifi gear.

Here's the latest on my system as it's changed quite a bit from 3 years ago. Long gone is the whole multi-channel setup, HT receivers, PS3, projectors and screens. It's just strictly 2-channel from here on out, which has always been my passion. I just grew tired of the multiple speakers and clutter. Even when I was running a HT setup, it was always focused around 2-channel "tuning" so to speak.

Anyway, enough yammering about. On with some pics...

Looking good! Any difference sonically?

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Right off the bat I noticed very low noise floor and great detail , I am going to give it time to break in and see what happens . I also replaced all my power cables with Furutech FI-50 ® AC Connectors and Furutech Power Cable Alpha 3 to my Uberbuss and Tube Mono Blocks and FP-3TS20 to my DAC and Server

A little system update...

Since our TV is connected via wifi and works perfectly, and the Marantz NA6005 is also wifi capable, I decided to give it try this past week. Every single file and music type I threw at it from my NAS, it performed flawlessly. Both Pandora and internet radio work flawless as well via wifi. So after three days of testing and listening, I decided to remove the music server gear (laptop, NAS, network switch and CAT5) from the system and/or room.

Essentially, a lot less clutter once again! As they say, less is more! :D

All of the music server gear is now neatly installed in our son's closet on the top wire shelf with plenty of ventilation. It's all out of the way yet still easily accessible, and still hardwired into the network.

Better pics to come later...

Wow, this is a booming thread... Not really. But anyways...

Got this all upgraded and updated this morning. New Netgear Gigabit switch, 6TB NAS, two 2TB USB drives (one for music backup, the other for picture backup).

10TB of storage sitting there, waiting to be used...

And a few quick pics of the system with the Oppo installed. I'll be dropping that shelf a little today to gain more ventilation to the Oppo.

which Synology NAS is this? i'm in the market for a NAS and i find their product line utterly bewildering. i just need file back up for a mac based system, i don't need to run any apps.

but nice set up tho. i'm intrigued by the 3.2 preamp- still sounding good?

It's the DS215J. So far, so good. The 3.2 still sounds excellent! And now with ALL cabling being Wireworld, it sounds even better!
