A different way to stream with your pi.

Recommended Posts

I haven't come across this here so I figured i'd share it. I stumbled on a new (to me) way to stream music using my rpi. It starts by installing a normal linux os,preferably something lite weight. The pi is connected to my sound system through a usb dac and my hard drive is connected through a hub.

I then access the pi with my laptop through the vnc connect. This allows me to run the pi headless and open it's desktop through my LT. It is pretty cool cause i can use one of the many free music players available for linux. Right now I am using clementine. It has everything I would need including cd ripping. It also has a remote that can be used on my phone or tablet. Once I start the player I can put the laptop aside and use the remote.I use deezer to stream and this setup is perfect because once im in control of the pi I can just acess deezer through the web browser and stream away.

Good call! What with concentrating on specialised audio only distros for the Pi, it's easy to forget that the Pi can be used as a 'normal' computer.

Does this mean you've given up on a more turnkey or dare I say elegant solution, to stream from Deezer using the Pi, as mentioned in your other thread?

We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.

He he no at this point nothing is final. There are advantages to both methods so right now I.m just experimenting to see what suits me best. Moode is def a slick set up but is limited to simply playback. The music players for linux tend to be geared for a specific type of listener. Some lean heavily toward cloud and radio streaming. Others more toward Network libraries and others are somewhere in between.Clementine will do all of them except it doesnt have a deezer pluggin. It does have spotify . I think I saw a place to enter a url though so I will try that out. It also has an E.Q. so some basic room correction could be done and also the ability to rip c.ds into pretty much any format i,d ever want to try.

Nuvola music player leans heavily toward cloud and radio but has LMS built in as well. Banshee and Tomahawk are very similar to Clementine but without cd ripping. And there are a few others I have not yet tried.

After many many hrs of experimenting I have found a winning set up.I am now using jriver, running headless and controlled from my laptop using remmina vnc .This set up allows me full access to the jriver software and it sounds fantastic. I can even run JR in the background and surf the net with no issues what so ever.I absolutely love this setup. The only factor will be the cost of JR. Right now I am using the trial version. I,m not sure my current cd collection is big enough to justify the cost so I have some decisions to make but for now I have 30 days of absolute audio bliss.:)

Well I been lurking this forums for sometime now.... You poke a subject that made me register and pitch in...

Why not run pimusicbox or even volumio?

There is quite a few spins that have a web-ui driven and take a way the overhead of VNC or any graphical interface.

I been doing this with a Pi B, pimusicbox, and a iFi Micro iDSD and has worked like a champ!

Most of those have been done with mixed results. Moode was the one I had most success with. set ups like moode or volumio are strictly playback and require separate programs for cd ripping. The method I use also allows for cd ripping, library management, web browsing while listening and Easy access to streaming sites via web browser. Not saying my method is better than others, just a way that suites my needs.
