What is the cost of the Sablon usb and Ethernet?  I assume we buy direct from them?

Hey @tboooe,

The USB was £540 and the Ethernet was £245. You can buy directly from Sablon or @toetapaudio on here is also a dealer for them

@d_elm & @austinpop thanks for the advice.

Cheers,

Since we're aware that even $55 OCXO clock is great for switches, some of us might wanna get our hands on some guinea pigs for experiments. 3Com might not be as good as Cisco Catalyst but it should be better than other consumer-oriented brands out there.

FYI - here's a list of switches on eBay, they're either unused or brand new:

Thanks, Rajiv.

I will need to go back and convince myself I can handle the the DIY part, but am encouraged!!

I just completed installing 2 dedicated circuits. I am using one to power my amp and the other a conditioner/strip, as you did. The other is powering my Goldenear subwoofer.

The two two circuits run from the main on the outside of the house and 80 feet thru the attic.

The wire I was looking for was 92-strand, 6 awg Romex per recommendations of Jim Weil. As I learned, Romex wire does not require a conduit. As it turned out, I could not find this anywhere, but was able to find it in THHN format which requires a conduit. Without getting further advice from Jim, the THHN, along with separate neutral and ground wires were purchased and pulled thru conduit. I was pretty proud we had overcome a hurdle and were now able to use the best wire possible.

I held great expectations SQ would be noticeably improved right away, but have been underwhelmed - and still am after 30 hours. Perhaps, additional burn-in will improve things, but I don’t recall reading about burn-in requirements.

I’m getting additional counsel from Jim and so far I think I understand it could have been a mistake to use conduit. I don’t quite get it yet, but he says, “the problem is that there is a constant variance in Z and Z cancelling as the wire separation is always changing. That is why you keep the outer layer of PVC insulation, to keep the wires in constant relationship.”

I’m still talking to him trying to understand while also going back to make sure there were no other inadvertent mistakes made with the installation. As painful as it will be, I may get a different Romex wire if Jim convinces me it will make a bigger difference.

BTW, none of this is on Jim. He’s been great.

Perhaps your previous wire was good enough?  Adding the conduit should also help with reducing EMI/RF.

Thats a bummer. The only thing I can think of is that you got 2 circuits. I assume this means 2 circuit breakers? Are they on the same phase on the panel?

This may seem counterintuitive, but before Jim’s 6 AWG recommendations, countless audiophiles have installed and been happy with good ol’ fashioned 10 AWG Romex, which is plentiful and cheap. Maybe you can get your electrician to run that alongside the same path, either to the same outlets, or a new set, and you can compare?

If the weather is clear, you could even just have him run a temporary run along the outside of the house to your gear, for a temporary evaluation.

Ultimately, there’s no downside to a clean line, even if the effect is not audible.

Rajiv - can u briefly explain what problem may arise from the 2 (side by side) circuit breakers and phasing? Thanks.

Bruce,

http://www.msbtechnology.com/faq/how-to-wire-your-house-for-good-power/ See the section on "Select same phase."

Make sure both your dedicated circuits are in the same phase, and if possible, pick a phase that has less "noisy" stuff, like AC compressors. Your electrician should be able to figure it out.

After reading many of the good results from using OCXO oscillator in network switches, since I have one ZyXEL switch laying around and had some time this afternoon, I decided to make a modification to see for myself how much of an improvement this will help in my system.  The result, very very positive, and I am very glad I gave this a try.  For the one that are curious, I am using LPS-1 set at 5V to power this modified switch, with a 3.3V linear regulator to power Conner Winfield OH4 OCXO.  Below are few pictures to show the mod.

<SNIP>

NICE!

Can you share your source for the clocks and the carrier boards? I have a bunch of ZyXEL switches here purchased with the express intention of putting them on my mod bench. This looks like an easy win!

TIA!

I think the best switch is still to use the one John Swenson found was totally blocking leakage.

Cisco SG100D-8. Don’t have the link to the post as all my bookmarks are gone.

He tested the V2 version. I suppose the 5 port version also works.

Greg in Mississippi

Hi Greg,

I made the board myself.  I happen to have a CNC machine in my garage, mostly used for making composite parts for my other hobby (remote airplane), and that is what I used to make this board.  In the meantime, based on the result from this mod, I also am thinking about trying it on another switch, but have yet to decide which one.  It seems either Cisco SG100D-8 or Netgear FS105/108 are widely recommended from their low or no leakage current nature after ground shunt, but I am curious if they can perform at a higher SQ level with this mod compare to XyXEL switch powered by LPS-1 or LPS-1.2.  I may go get a Netgear GS108 (a current production gigabit switch) to do the mod and compare...hopefully with even better result.

Regards,

Kevin

Kevin,

Thanks for the response. I also have one of the Cisco switches (the one that John recommended at first, the SG100D-08) and truthfully, I prefer the  SQ of the ZyXEL ones in my setup. I have all DIY'd linear-supplies on my networking gear and no connection to the internet (and if I had one, it'd be an isolated one such as with an optical link), so the leakage thing is less of an issue for me, though we don't know if the ZyXEL's also prevent the transmission of the high-impedence leakage in the same way as the recommended Cisco ones... they might. No matter, we'll never know now unless someone else sets up to measure them.

Also, that you CNC'd the board means I won't have to ask you for the board files. I can do the same manually or cut my own board or just do it PTP.

Again, THANKS!

Not to derail things, but just brief comment.  I just got into FPV drones myself.  Excellent parallels from an EE perspective of these two hobbies.

More than agree John.

I got the oscillator from Digikey, and the link is here:  https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/connor-winfield/OH4610LF-025.0M/CW899-ND/5641634

Hi Kevin:

Not to throw a blanket on your project, but the phase-noise/jitter performance of that $55 C-W OCXO is not even as good as the published specs for the $10 Crystek 575 (and it is a fact that actual production 575s come off the line in recent years with 10Hz numbers of 108~112dBc/Hz).

As John has pointed out many times, one needs to spend over $400 to get OCXOs that surpass the Crysteks (or persuade Patrick in Texas to had measure/pick an outlier NDK XO).

Cheers,

Alex,

Thanks for that reminder. I'll start with a couple of 575's then.

HI Alex,

Good point...I would love to get some Crystek 575 25MHz oscillators to try and compare, but not seeing any place I could purchase.  Could you help (again)?

Regards,

Kevin

Alex,

Ditto. I just looked for the same, thinking I had seen some before, and am not finding Crystek 575 25MHz at either Digikey or Mouser.
