Lowering of noise is perceived as increase in volume, even though actual volume is the same. This also enables us to listen actually louder, b/c much of what bothers us at louder volumes is the perception of more noise, even if we aren't specifically aware of the noise per se.

 

In other words , an improved dynamic range. I wonder if it also has something to do with instantaneous current capabilities, as the manufacturers of the higher quality electrolytic capacitors used in amplifier power supplies for energy storage specify "slew rate"

 

How a Digital Audio file sounds, or a Digital Video file looks, is governed to a large extent by the Power Supply area. All that Identical Checksums gives is the possibility of REGENERATING the file to close to that of the original file.

To further expand on what Alex C has said about the size of a higher output voltage version, but in a simplified form.

 

A typical Supercap has a maximum voltage rating of 2.7V. To increase the output voltage to say 7V, you would need 3 Supercaps in a series combination .

You could choose to use for example,Supercapacitors of 10 FARADS capacitance .

However when you have 3 x 10 FARAD capacitors in series, the total capacitance is then reduced by a factor of 3 = 3.33 FARADS.

To obtain a 10 FARAD capacitance with a 7V rating, you would need 3 paralell banks, with a total of 9 capacitors.

If you wanted a capacitor rated for 12V operation you would need 5 Supercapacitors in series.

However, if you used 10 FARAD capacitors, the total capacitance would then be only 2 FARADS.

To obtain a 10 FARAD capacitor rated to work at 12V would require 5 parallel capacitor banks, with a total of 25 capacitors!

To obtain seamless switching between the charging and on load capacitor banks , you would need to double the number of capacitors.

i.e 18 x 10 FARAD capacitors for 10 FARAD 7V working, and 50 x 10 FARAD capacitors for 10 FARAD 12V working.

Another alternative could be to use much larger value capacitors, but the overall principle remains the same,

You would also need additional control devices, optocouplers etc.

Your PCB size has now become very much larger, with a substantially increased component cost.

Or noise may annoy, but lowering the noise in a stereo playback system, does not increase dynamic range

 

Of course not, but it gives the APPEARANCE of an improvement in dynamic range, especially when notes and voices appear to disappear into "blackness" or appear to last a little longer. You can often hear low level detail that you may previously have not noticed.

BTW, I was replying to the attached (above). I did not dispute that the actual volume was the same.

Can you really claim that a low level signal buried in the noise floor has the same effective dynamic range as the same low level signal clear of the noise floor, which would also apply if the proper amount of dither was applied, which can substantially increase the 96dB dynamic range of CD.

To quote Wikipaedia

"The 16-bit compact disc has a theoretical undithered dynamic range of about 96 dB,[20][a] however, the perceived dynamic range of 16-bit audio can be 120 dB or more with noise-shaped dither, taking advantage of the frequency response of the human ear.[
