Best windows software player

Recommended Posts

I have got to wonder if you gave used HQP in full screen mode/touch screen mode? I use a touch screen just for this reason...

I googled and saw to add --fullscreen to the shortcut, and that worked well enough, but if you are in fullscreen mode, i don't see how you do song selection? e.g. How do i pick a different artist or track?....

nvm...i see it opens desktop minimized, but that appears to be the same interface...that just requires more intervention not less....anyway, i think his next release will be a great interim solution for me...thanks though for the info.

There's the button in desktop mode toolbar to switch between the two GUIs. Touch mode has two ways to select content, on the left there's the cover flow for album selection and on the right there's the playlist editor.

These are explained in the manual too... ;)

Best software player? No need to look further from MUSICHI. It has a free trial version of about one month.

It has the best library management one can find.bit has a learning curve, but once you use it, you can never go back.

My library is over 100.000 tracks and I can find anything I want.

Sound wise is superior to JRiver.

You should really try it.

On the top row in desktop mode, to the far right of: play, pause, rewind is the full screen button. Once open you can swipe left or right to go to the library or playlist.

Well, I said i would continue this thread until I bought something.

After trying MANY different windows players...it is my contention that HQPlayer is the best windows program and the program I opted to buy.

Roon has a pretty interface, but it lacks some basic functionality (ability to browse and play from folders) that i would want in a player and the SQ of the player itself is subpar to that of HQPlayer. It also is over 3 times the price.

There are threads on how you can interface HQPlayer with other front ends to make it look pretty, but I have found for my basic requirements, HQPlayer is enough for me for now. I Hope that HQPlayer teams up with another player some day or that some player licenses hqplayer to use with a nicer gui, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen any time soon.

Anyway, imho, the only player worth purchasing at this time is HQPlayer.

If you want a nice interface, something very flexible, and is FREE, Foobar would be my personal recommendation.

I have discounted all other players for one reason or another, even my paid copy of Jriver, but it would be my 3rd choice....jmo...

Value= Performance/Price:

I'm not asserting that Windows Media Player is the best SQ player for Windows 10, but it's decent for cd quality files and works with my NAS to playback apple losses CDs from my NAS library over my network.  iTunes didn't work very well over my network.  And WMP is also free, and likely already on your Windows 10 PC.

WMP is not part of my best playback system, but for use on my desktop PC to listen to music in the background while I do other stuff, it is quite useful and easy to use.

Best Stereo System: Wired Sonos Connect -> AQ Cinammon Digital Coax -> Marantz SA-8005 -> AA Black Momba 2 interconnects -> Marantz PM-15S2 -> Kimber 8TC speaker Cables -> Zu Soul Superfly speakers.

Ingest> NAS> Distribution: Sony Vaio Laptop ripping via ITunes to Apple Lossless, manually synced to WD Mycloud NAS, Linksys 1900AC Router, Netgear Gig E switch, generic Ethernet cables, TPLinc ethernet power line extenders.

I started a previous thread, but just called it best Software player, but got too much input on MACs, and i refuse (like the vast majority of pc users) to bite the apple.

Apple has decent players (or so i have heard, e.g. A+), but there is nothing decent for windows players. They are all missing something.

I have had Apple machines and they were good, but recently Apple has removed MagSafe, useful USB ports and bumped up prices for machines with quite small memory and ordinary screens. The Airbook 13 remained the last worth buying but was comprehensively beaten on price and features by the Lenovo 711 - which also had the Kaby Lake CPU I wanted.

Amazingly Apple have no 'folding-back' designs in the range either, which I wanted as a touchscreen interface for the HiFi. The picture above is running Win10 and SeeDeClip4 music server/player.

I got tired of Apple's iTunes and Windows Groove, WMP etc because I wanted to be able to separate the player and server if required and also none of them sorted my music collection properly, which is part WAV arranged in Artist/Album format from when I ripped my CDs years ago, and part MP3/Flac/M4a etc from more recent purchases. I wanted these properly ordered and to be able to play all of them from any spot in the house, and to be able to use off-the-shelf consumer gear to do it: So I wrote SeeDeClip4 as I could find nothing that did all that.

BTW I usually stream 24bit music: Chrome (running SeeDeClip4 on the Lenovo above) can cope with many rates and resolutions.

I am 100% with you. As it turns out, I am looking for the same thing.

It is a darn shame that the only software that supports HQP is Roon, Muso, and Alchemy. Like you, I am not a fan of Roon. I agree that it is overpriced. And if you are a classical music fan, Roon doesn't even work properly. Muso is slightly better, but the author of Muso won't even consider a feature request to enable browse by folder.

+1. Im on the same boat. In effect, Foobar is my favourite interface so far. I disliked Music, Alchemy and I abhore Driver since forever.

Having been using explorer + Winamp for years, I will try your suggestion for using hqplayer. Sounds nostalgic.

Im trying out hqplayer, in native dsd mode it is very similar if not identical to Foobar, I'm curious to try its upsampling capabilities.

quoted Keith_W saying: "Only software that supports HQP is Roon, Muso, and Alchemy.

Currently I'm listening to a 96kHz/24bit Flac on my Apple via Chromium, being streamed from SeeDeClip4.

The main problem I have is not the kit that accepts HQ audio but actually finding the stuff, mine mainly comes from sound engineer friends, so it's not very mainstream :)

If you do use it please let me know which bits you like, dislike, want changed, and what may not work: This is software that's in active development. It also has an HF custom coloured dither for those pesky 16bit tracks that I'm rather pleased with. It will certainly browse your folders properly (3 different options of folder-vs-metadata integration) and has absolutely no issue with HQ audio as long as you chose Chromium/Chrome to play it through. Feedback is always welcome of any kind, it all makes the process better.

Firefox I discovered only likes 16bit audio, but you can literally throw anything at Chrome, I think Google's quite serious about making their stuff work: with rather helps my HQ audio.

Do you know how SQ of Musichi compares to HQP?

Musichi souns better IF HQP is not doing any upsampling.

HOWEVER, if you have a powerful PC and want to upsample to DSD, then you can have HQP as an external player and Musichi for library management.

That's good to know, I'm just playing PCM without any upsampling. Can you describe in what ways that Musichi sounds better than HQP in this way please?

On my system, Musichi had more clarity, more base, better imaging, more detailed

On that basis I will download the trial for Musichi and compare with HQPLAYER for Redbook. It's strange how different audio software players can produce better or worse sound in bit perfect playback and non oversampling. But I know it does happen because HQPLAYER sounds much better then J-River or Foobar for pure Redbook.

You should give it a try. On the musichiplay, you should Go to Settings--> Audio --> play from memory for best audio playback.

First, open musichi library and add some music folders so that you get an idea of the player. At first, it might seem difficult but once you get the idea, then there is no way back.
