Jud
Thanks for the link. The writer's views are quite similar to mine, although he expresses himself in a much clearer manner and has deeper knowledge of the subject. He even mentions Peter Gabriel's label whose name I had forgotten... The recording I suggested is probably of an early more traditional phase. R RealWorld (Gabriel's label). They have many exceptional recordings of Khan and others. They provided downloads for years, then sadly stopped and went exclusively to CD and vinyl. Jud
@ semente I'm quite into klezmer but I admit mainly in modern or jazz-fusion form. I recommend strongly John Zorn and his label (Tzadik) recordings. For example: Yay klezmer! One never knows, do one? - Fats Waller The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It was very long ago in my school years, and I knew John McLauglin from Mahavishnu Orchestra recordings, and, strangely enough, I first knew about Shakti from a short news story in Morning Star, a newspaper of UK communist party, which was accessible in USSR in those years. Shortly after that I managed to get A Handful of Beauty album, it was in 1977 or 78. Little later I was able to find other two LP of their initial line-up. It was very much different from everything in jazz, or rock or jazz rock area what was known to me then, and yes, it was mind-blowing. If it make sense I would summarize my initial impressions with a single word "fresh", and it is still applicable..) Whoops, yes, you're quite right. You know how when you're a kid (and maybe later) you imagine yourself as a guitarist in performance playing some great solo? Well, McLaughlin started playing and he was faster than I could *think* the notes! I thought to myself, "Well maybe he's just got the general groove and not thinking of individual notes...?" Then Shakti started playing note-for-note the same thing, and I was seeing and hearing it in front of me, and loving it, but having a very hard time comprehending how it was even possible. christopher3393 and AnotherSpin 1 1 One never knows, do one? - Fats Waller The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. Jud
Sometimes of course all is not as it seems. I saw a wonderful concert many years ago with Ralph Towner and John Abercrombie. I was a friend of a friend of the promoter and got to go backstage afterwards. A guy was asking Abercrombie in disbelief how he’d managed to play a particular passage during the show. Abercrombie laughed and said the name of some effects pedal. He said “If I could do that without [the effects pedal], I’d be a motherf**ker!”, and laughed again. It was clever of WW to pick them up for his tribute to Lisbon. Have one of their albums, but don’t remember which right at the moment.
