audio boost

I am using my computer for both ripped cds and blu-rays. Cds are fine but the volume level of blu-rays us very low. I was told by the manufacturer of my speakers that my amps are a good match for my speakers and this is most likely a gain issue. He recommended experimenting with different software for movies - specifically vlc which provides for an audio boost option. I tried it and it does provide the additional volume I need with no clipping. My question is does this boost function negatively affect the audio quality in any way? The manufacturer stated that it does not and that the "100% volume" is an arbitrary number. thank you.

It depends on how revealing your system is. You probably won't notice any negative effects. I would recommend, however, using software other than VLC. To me, VLC sounds bright/harsh. Try smplayer. Its just a nicer app. Everyone who tries it, keeps it.

My system is very revealing - if there are negative effects my system will reveal them. What are the "negative effects" that you mention? I've researched the issue but can't get a handle on exactly what this audio boost is doing to the sound. .

Digital gain has a bad rap. I do not know exactly why off hand anymore, but when I would surpass "0" going into +db, it sounded like crap.
