Ok. I've run 14 different tests with 11 different USB drives. Results as follows (except for the original drive which never worked - but functions fine otherwise - no other drives were reformatted for this test). I am also publishing a pic of the drives included in my test, which include PNY, HP, DatastickPro and no-name (promotional giveaways):

512MB (1 passed with a freshly formatted volume - had no choice as the drive was encrypted)

1GB (3 - 1 consistent failure - the original USB drive [don't it figure]. Note I had a second one which looks similar but may not be from the same no-name MFR)

2GB (2 passed with full and empty volumes - tested 2x)

32GB (1 passed with full and empty volumes - tested 2x)

64GB (2 passed with partially full volume)

128GB (1 passed with completely full volume)

256GB (2 - using a microSD card in an SD adapter with 2 different readers - both failed as the very old readers couldn't manage the large SD card and I was unable to mount them on my PC)

 

I know of 1 other instance with a USB drive not working, as reported by superstar19 back in post 4134, but the circumstances were different I think.

 

Conclusions: there is apparently a rare (<5%, based on a rather small sampling) problem with SD compatibility. Drive sizes from 512MB up to 128GB all seem to work fine. I won't kick a hornet's nest regarding drive preparation 😎.

 

One additional note: MikeFresh earlier asked me why I had requoted a previous post which included a potentially confusing dropbox link which I had denied doing. In scanning my earlier posts I see that I somehow did repost that. For this I am truly sorry. I can't imagine how I did this,  but it was unintentional. Please accept my apologies.

The term “freshly formatted” unqualified can mean different things to different people and depending on the context. FWIW this is why I tend to use terms “drive preparation” and such in this context since a properly prepared drive is critical for success and that often requires more than simple “formatting”. 

 

So, when you say “freshly formatted”, what are you referring to in more precise terms?  Also, did you employ a consistent drive preparation — or  “formatting” if you will — procedure including a check to ensure the resulting low level layout is as intended on every drive you used in your test?  Were there differences in the low level characteristics, e.g. partition schemes, partition layout etc. between those that worked and those that did not?  Are you using a GPT scheme, an MBR scheme or a mix of each?

 

The reason I’m asking these questions is because as it stands with the information you’ve provided, there’s nothing to suggest that “all drives were properly prepared for the target player and yet some would not work” as opposed to “out of several drives containing an AutoScript folder, some worked and some did not”.

 

In other words, until an ACME brand drive is believed with a high level of confidence  to have been properly prepared for this application for the specific player model and yet would not work, it is premature to conclude that ACME brand drives are incompatible with the SACD ripping process.

Thank you. I got them new in '99 in a trade and never looked back. They look great in rosewood and sound even better, paired with a VAC Phi 200.

So basically you did not include the most fundamental step required to ensure that a USB drive will work properly in the SACD ripping application; which, let’s keep in mind, is a hack and as such has more stringent requirements than general file system access on a computer.  

 

You did not reinitialize the drives or for that matter take any steps well documented in this forum to eliminate the myriad USB drive pitfalls that have confounded many, myself included.  

 

For whatever reason, you chose to “test” a bunch of random drives without bothering to reinitialize them first. That’s fine other than the fact that you present the results of a fundamentally flawed test as evidence supporting your earlier — and frankly baseless — claim that the OE problems you experienced were due to an incompatible brand of USB drive.

 

For the sake of the people that will find and attempt to sift through this thread in the future and have no way initially to separate fact from fiction: 

 

1) There is no evidence to confirm or even suggest that some brands of USB drives are incompatible with the SACD ripping process. 

 

2) The body of non-evidence includes USB drives from whence the AutoScript launches as evidenced by the drawer opening whilst the ripping process is unsuccessful, e.g. sacd_extract will not work. 

 

3) It is highly likely that a random USB drive you find under the sofa cushion with your late favorite dog’s teeth marks on it will work as-is with nothing more than a functional AutoScript folder copied to it. This is called luck with the odds tilted in your favor. 

 

4) (3) above is not guaranteed by any means. OTOH following a known drive preparation procedure will virtually guarantee that whatever problems you may or may not encounter will come further down the pipeline.

Step 0: Make sure that the QUICK START system setting is ON (without this there will be no SLEEP MODE)

Step 1: Power on Sony S790

Step 2: Connect USB thumb drive/AutoScript runs/tray opens automatically/load SACD but don't close the tray

Step 3: Power down Sony S790/tray closes automatically/pause while player goes to sleep/display flashes OFF/AutoScript gains root access control/remove USB thumb drive

Step 4: Execute/Run the rip in either SACDExtractGUI, or ISO2DSD

Will do, I will asterisk both the the BDP-790 and BDP-S6200 as needing the specific/Sony-unique sacd_extract_6200 version of the AutoScript.

Thank you @Nexus3, and while I did publish the specific steps and help others to utilize the sleep method, the discovery and suggestion of how to do it were all @mindset, I only tested and confirmed using a few different Sony Blu-ray models and firmware versions, and posted a video which some members found helpful.

 

Related to the above, @mindset stated in his testing (but it's certainly worth repeating here) that the exact steps do differ slightly with the S6200. Specifically, the USB thumb drive containing the AutoScript can only be inserted AFTER the S6200 has been put to sleep, it will not work like the other Sonys (including apparently the S790 as detailed by @Nexus3 above) where the AutoScript can only run PRIOR to putting the unit to sleep.

Inserting the USB memory stick AFTER sleep (lights off) or shortly after power down / tray closure. 

 

I can surely say that this DOES NOT work on the S790 model,

so there normal approach (USB first, disc second and power off last) is the way to go.

 

Maybe the correct order depends on the script files used.

@mindset Can you shed some light on the script files you have used on your S6200?

Yes and I'd also assume the part of the script that opens the tray automatically must be removed from the script used with the S6200, otherwise USB insertion after the unit sleeps would immediately wake it for a disc tray opening, no?

I've been following this thread for a few days, and while I don't have a great many SACD's, I do have a few that I bought when they were on sale, and treasure. Including one Escape, Journey.

 

I have an X800, which I know no one has successfully used, so on a hunch, I went and searched Amazon for specific models that supports the ripping. Lo and behold, I found an S390 and an S590, and they are now on their way to me... Singapore, so it will take a while.

Topic: Ripping SACDs with the Sony BDP-S590.

 

I am new to this thread. I recently acquired a S590 as its been added to your compatibility list. The machine came with what was probably one of the last firmware update: M12 R.0510. Following instructions found here, I successfully downgraded it to firmware M12 R.0430 as it is supposed to be the last version supporting SACD-R playback. I prepared a usb stick and copied  the "AutoScript" folder on it. I also installed on my Windows 10 PC the Sonore Iso2Dsd_gui in a directory that also contains the sacd_extract application.

 

After powering on the S590 with the usb stick plugged, the tray of the blu-ray reader opens. I insert a SACD to rip and close it. But I always fail to successfully connect to the device via the iso2dsd software. I always get the following message:

 

Failed to connect 
libsacdread: Can't open 192.168.1.148:2002 for reading 

 

I tried to connect to the S590 (which is connected to my local network via a wifi extender, should it be necessarily hard wired to the router?) in opening a Telnet session using PuTTY as also recommended somewhere in this thread. I get the following error message: "Network error: Connection refused".

 

As I am not an expert in network management, I suspect that something prevents me to connect to the S590 on the network (firewall of something else)

 

Maybe someone, more experienced than I am, can suggest a way to connect to the Sony Blu-Ray reader on the local network. There are probably other key things I do overlook...

 

Reading this thread, I kind of understood that using PuTTY one can open a Telnet session (in Linux?) and conduct a few tests or obtain some more information on the chipset version of the machine, etc. In doing so, at least, there is communication with the device. I would like to find a way to at least access it and eventually see if I can successfully rip a SACD as it seems so easy for others.

 

On a different topic, I also own a OPPO BDP-095 Blu-Ray player. I guess that this machine is not considered "compatible" with this ripping process.

If you try to connect with PuTTY but get the response "connection refused", a Telnet connection was made but the Sony player cannot be controlled by the scripts. If you get the response "cannot connect to [IP address]" this means your computer has not made a connection to the Sony. There may be a network problem to resolve.

 

I suspect that the USB stick you are using has problems.  We have been seeing this lately where some response to the scripts is shown (like the door opening) but other functions do not work (like telnet connection).

 

I will PM you my guide, which has more info on telnet to the Sony.  Check the content of the scripts you have against what is in the guide.  Then try a different USB stick.

Is it only those two items in the directory?

 

If you want to try the server method again, you need the entire folder contents downloaded from Sonore to stay intact, there should be 4 items:

Thank you MikeyFresh for your question and suggestion. You are right. My folder contains all the proper files you listed in your post.

 

Phthalocyanine kindly sent me his excellent guide to rip SACD on a Sony S590. I will try to follow all his steps and process. Hopefully, it will work. I may try again the server method using the Sonore tools. I will report back on my attempts and success or failure.

Hello @BACHJS welcome aboard!

 

Should you choose to tryout SACDExtractGUI, I would recommend the following two tests buttons:

 

1. PING - if this fails you have got a network issue - check your player's LAN or WiFi configuration.

 

2. TEST - if ping is OK, but TEST fails the counterpiece software ought to be loaded from the USB flash drive onto your Blu-ray player is NOT "playing along" - check if the USB contents are fine, followed the designated ripping steps and in case of a SONY if the Quick Startup option is ENABLED.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (since I've said this before in this thread), your symptoms sound like an indication of what is the most common problem people encounter when trying to rip SACDs from these Sony Blu-Ray players: The network connection is fine, and the SACD ripping scripts and apps on both the USB stick and the computer are fine - it's just that the Sony unit has mounted/taken control of the SACD disc and won't "let go" of it so the SACD ripping executable (app on your computer) can do the rip.

 

When you say the Sony's drawer opens and you put in the disc and close the tray - are you closing the tray with the eject button, or with the power button? If you close the tray with the eject button, the Sony machine will read and mount the SACD disc, making SACD ripping from your computer impossible and generating the exact error message you have reported. If, instead, you press the power button, then the drawer will close but the Sony will then immediately go to sleep, without mounting the SACD. This will leave the SACD free to be accessed by the the SACD ripping app, so it can successfully do the rip.

 

Of course, the above requires that the Sony be set to "Quick Start" mode in its settings, so that pressing the power button will only put it to sleep rather than turning it off altogether.

 

We all owe @Phthalocyanine an incredible debt for discovering that these Sony units can be used to rip SACDs, and for his tireless and always-friendly assistance to so many members here. That said, recommending that folks troubleshoot problems with the Sony machines by trying to telnet in and control the machine or generate diagnostic error messages, tends to take newbies down blind alleys. Generally speaking, the problem most folks have with the Sony machines has nothing to do with telnet and cannot be solved or even definitively diagnosed with telnet.

 

My recommendation for the simplest method is below - and @BACHJS, from what I can tell from your comment, it sounds like you've already taken care of steps 1, 2, 3, and 5 in this list. It's also possible you've already taken care of step 4, I'm not sure. I would guess step 6 is where your problem lies, although if you have not taken care of step 4 first, then step 6 will not work.

1. Ensure the SACD ripping GUI app and the SACD ripping executable are both together in the same folder/directory on your computer.
2. Ensure your USB drive is properly formatted (MS-DOS/FAT16 or FAT32) and has a readable boot sector format (Master Boot Record and not GUID).Ensure you have correct AutoScript files, inside the AutoScript folder, on the root level of your USB drive.Set the Sony to Quick Start mode.
3. Connect the Sony machine to your home network via wi-fi or an ethernet cable. Use the Sony's menus or any of several free network-scanning utilities on your computer to obtain he Sony's IP address on your network.
4. Set the Sony to Quick Start mode (so it will sleep rather than power off entirely when you press the power button).
5. Plug the USB drive into the Sony, wait for the tray to open, and put in the SACD in the tray.
6. Press the POWER button, which will close the tray and then put the Sony to sleep.
7. Open the SACD ripping app on your computer, enter the Sony's IP address (followed by :2002), then press Execute.

 

That's it. Not telnet, no PuTTY.

This is the only thing I have in AutoScript (I do not even have AutoScript.TSS).

The following is a working sequence.  Inserting the USB stick before putting the player in sleep doesn't work.  (debugging via telnet shows sacd_extract_6200 won't even start)

• Press the power button to put the player in sleep (with the quick start mode enabled)
• Insert the USB stick
• Run sacd_extract from a PC

I have a Sony BDP-S790 but no Linus computer and do not understand much of code command. Can you refer me to a place where I can download the ready made files (special treatment for the BDP-S790 / sacd_extract_6200) - for the USB-stick so I can just copy them to a USB-stick ? - and get on with the rip process. 

PS: What firmware version is ideal for ripping on BDP-S790 ? Can you update firmware backwards or forward as you please or can I risk that the firmware version on my player will never make it a SACD ripper ?

Hello @nUUK25, the release of the binary is imminent!  

We just want to make sure whether we can use a combined package / script for the S790 AND S6200 or if two seperate scripts are actually required.

The firmware level on a BDP-S790 should be irrelevant for SACD ripping (I used the newest FW btw).

As for SACD-R playback (fails on M13.R.0510), I can't say for sure yet, as this "project" is still on my agenda (FW downgrade is a bit tricky but possible).
