Long Firewire run?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I need to run a long firewire cable from my closeted hard drive to my Mac Mini in the stereo cab. I was ready to buy the GoldX cable (http://store.cablesplususa.com/cpcgx1394ab-15.html) , recommended elsewhere here, but after doing my measurements, it looks like I'll need at 16-19', and the longest GoldX is 15'. Wondering what my options are:

1) Can I extend a firewire cable without any loss of quality? Will a simple adaptor suffice, or do I need some kind of extender box that boosts the signal strength? Any brand recommendations? I'm looking to keep the budget down on this (the Goldx 15' is only $13.)

2) Put my hard drive (a somewhat noisy Seagate FreeAgent) in my hi fi cabinet. The cab has a sliding door that can be closed, which might mitigate the noise, but I'd be concerned about over-heating.

3) Find a longer firewire cable - any recommendations? I've seen a few on the web, but they seemed mostly made for cameras.

4) Find a way to live with a 15' cable?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Too bad there's nothing between a 4.5m & 10m!
